Jury awards family $130M in medical malpractice case

ROYAL OAK (AP) — A jury has awarded the family of a boy who suffered brain damage after being treated at a suburban Detroit hospital more than $130 million in a medical malpractice case.

The McKeen & Associates law firm announced the verdict this week following a trial in Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac.

The firm says that in 2006 technicians at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak delayed calling a code blue and failed to give chest compressions as required by the standard of care to then-2-month-old Vihn Tran. The boy’s brain was deprived of oxygen. He now suffers from cerebral palsy.

Beaumont Hospital says in a statement that it took the case before a jury because the hospital believes the care delivered “was appropriate.”

The hospital plans to appeal.

U.S. attorney unveils broad team to confront drug-dealing groups

DETROIT (AP) — Federal law enforcement agencies in southeastern Michigan are forming a team with local police to crack down on violent drug-dealing crime groups.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider says the strike force will work under one roof in Detroit. He says it will be an efficient way to share information and pursue criminals.

Timothy Plancon, local head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, says fentanyl has become the “game-changer,” leading to scores of overdose deaths as drug dealers mix it with heroin and reap easy profits.

Schneider says gangs and cartels work together, and law enforcement must do the same.

Sotomayor tells kids:?Reading helped me reach the top court

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Justice Sonia Sotomayor says reading helped her reach the Supreme Court.

Sotomayor on Sunday celebrated the release of her two children’s books by speaking to parents and children at the Newark Public Library in New Jersey.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports she said she never dreamed she would become a Supreme Court justice because she didn’t know what one was when she was a child. She says her mother made sure books were part of her upbringing.

Sotomayor’s books, “Turning Pages: My Life Story” and “The Beloved World of Sonia Sotomayor!” examine how her family and her determination moved her through life.

Boo! A Halloween display so scary that neighbor calls 911

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Halloween decoration hanging in the window of a North Dakota home is so scary that it prompted calls from concerned neighbors and at least one plea for police assistance.

The sign reading “Help Me,” which appears to be written in blood, is part of Becky Muhs’ display for her favorite holiday at her West Fargo home.

WDAY-TV reports that Muhs and her husband began getting messages from neighbors over the weekend asking if they were OK, and one neighbor even
dialed 911, leading to a visit from a police officer.

Muhs says the incident ended in a laugh.
