Top court hears key case on jobless fraud
LANSING (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court has heard arguments in a case potentially affecting thousands of people who were wrongly accused of defrauding the unemployment program.
The issue for the court on Wednesday: When did the clock start ticking for people to sue?
An automated computer system run by Gov. Rick Snyder's administration was a disaster. People were accused of cheating to get unemployment aid. They were forced to repay money before the state finally acknowledged errors.
This case isn't about getting money returned. Rather, plaintiffs are suing over their hardship and lack of due process when they were wrongly declared to be fraudsters.
The state argues that the six-month clock began with the first notice from the unemployment agency. But attorney Jennifer Lord says the key event occurred later when her clients actually lost money.
Justices reject appeal of environmental ruling by Judge Kavanaugh
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is declining to review an environmental ruling written by Brett Kavanaugh in his former role as an appeals court judge.
The justices on Tuesday left in place an August 2017 ruling the new Supreme Court justice wrote that struck down an Obama-era Environmental Protection Agency rule. That rule was intended to limit the release of a class of chemicals that contribute to global warming.
Kavanaugh wrote that EPA lacks the authority to regulate the chemicals under a part of the Clean Air Act that addresses ozone-depleting chemicals.
The chemicals are hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. They are industrial chemicals primarily used in cooling that replaced ozone-eating compounds.
The Trump administration says it agrees with the appellate ruling and that a new rule is in the works.
Free steak tips offered for tips on burglar
RAYMOND, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire restaurant is offering free steak tips to anyone with tips on a recent burglary at their location.
Police say a man broke into Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery in Raymond around early Tuesday and stole more than $25,000.
The man was captured on surveillance video entering the closed restaurant with a crowbar, and a restaurant manager says one of their safes was broken into.
The restaurant says in a Facebook post it is offering a $2,000 cash reward and free steak tips for the duration of the burglar's sentence to anyone who helps police catch the man.
Woman dies in crash while leaving cemetery
PITTSFIELD, Vt. (AP) — State Police say an 84-year-old woman was killed in a car crash while leaving a cemetery.
Authorities say the crash happened at Pittsfield Village Cemetery on Sept. 29.
Police say Lorraine Sulham was driving up a gravel hill at the cemetery around when her car began to go off the road. Sulham put her vehicle in reverse to correct the issue, and her car ended up rolling down an embankment.
Sulham died at the scene. Police say she was not wearing a seat belt.
After the funeral, she was buried at the Pittsfield cemetery.
