The Jewish Bar Association of Michigan (JBAM) presented its inaugural Champion of Justice Award to Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard H. Bernstein during a special ceremony Oct. 15 in Southfield. The award recognizes “the significant impact of a legal professional who has dedicated him/herself to the practice of law and improving the justice system, while exhibiting the highest level of professionalism and civility,” according to a spokesperson for JBAM. Justice Bernstein was elected to the Supreme Court in 2014, becoming the first blind jurist to earn a seat on the state’s highest court. Justice Bernstein was previously known as a tireless advocate for disabled rights as an attorney heading the public service division for The Sam Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills. Blind since birth, Justice Bernstein is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan and earned his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law.
