Benson, former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and others discuss democracy and voting

Michigan Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson and former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer were among several notable speakers on Tuesday at a Making Every Vote Count Foundation (MEVC) event that focused on identifying alternatives to the presidential election process.

“We need to bring together voices from both sides of the aisle to discuss democracy, elections and how our political landscape would change if everyone voted and all votes were counted equally,” said Reed Hundt, former FCC Chairman and MEVC chairman and CEO.

“A Totally Different Campaign” – The Way We Select Presidents, which took place at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, also featured:

• Nolan Finley, editorial page editor of The Detroit News;

• The Hon. Joe Schwarz, former U.S. Congressman;

• Tara Ross, author of “The Indispensable Electoral College”;

• Patrick Rosenstiel, senior consultant to the National Popular Vote and CEO of Ainsley Shea.

“It is essential to hear leaders from both parties debating and discussing the system America uses to elect our president,” Hundt said. “While partisan fights often control the political airways, this unique forum provided an opportunity to put those disagreements aside and discuss ways to create a fairer, transparent process in presidential elections.”

Josephine A. DeLorenzo, a partner at Plunkett Cooney, has been appointed commissioner-at-large of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) Board of Commissioners.

A co-leader of the firm’s Appellate Law Practice Group, DeLorenzo was recently appointed to the post by the Michigan Supreme Court. Commissioners serve three-year terms commencing each year upon adjournment of the SBM annual meeting.

A former law clerk to the Honorable Kurtis T. Wilder when he served on the Michigan Court of Appeals, DeLorenzo focuses her practice in the areas of appellate law, insurance coverage and governmental law.
Named a “Michigan Rising Star” in appellate law by Michigan Super Lawyers magazine, DeLorenzo is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts in Michigan, as well as in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court.
