Adoption Day observances scheduled in Mt. Clemens
Macomb County Circuit Court will take part in National Adoption Day observations with a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the courthouse in downtown Mt. Clemens.
Michigan Supreme Court Justice David Viviano will join Chief Circuit Court Judge James Biernat Jr. and Chief Judge Pro Tempore Matthew Switalski to recognize adopting families and finalize a child’s forever home.
Adoption confirmation hearings are normally closed to the public but, for this occasion and with consent of the adopting families, the public is permitted to attend.
The adoption confirmation hearings will be held on the fifth floor of the courthouse starting at 9 a.m.
State completes inspections of 43 Detroit funeral homes
DETROIT (AP) — State regulators have found no serious mortuary science or pre-paid funeral violations following inspections of 43 funeral homes in Detroit.
Michigan's Licensing and Regulatory Affairs office said the completed inspections followed the discoveries last month in Detroit of the remains of 63 fetuses at the Perry Funeral Home and the mummified remains of 10 fetuses and a full-term infant at the closed Cantrell Funeral Home.
Both funeral homes are being investigated by police.
The state said 10 of the 43 inspections were completed within the past 15 months, while 33 were done over the last two weeks. Inspectors did find lesser violations that included non-renewal of medical waste permits and improper posting of licenses.
Michigan has more than 700 funeral homes.
Pancake stop snags inmate who fled jail with help from mom
NEWNAN, Ga. (AP) — An inmate fled a Georgia jail with the help of his mom and then went out for pancakes.
News outlets report 27-year-old Joshua Gullatt and 54-year-old Kathy Lynn Pence were arrested Tuesday at an IHOP restaurant where they met with his children.
Gullatt had slipped out a side door of the Heard County jail hours earlier. Investigators then listened to a phone call Gullatt made to Pence about the escape.
It just so happened that during that same phone call, authorities said, Pence was pulled over for running a stop sign, so officers identified her car, and tracked her phone to the Newnan IHOP.
Gullatt had been slated for work release. Now he’s charged with felony escape and his mother is charged with aiding and abetting.
Police capture ‘unruly’ and ‘uncooperative’ runaway pig
PALMYRA, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say they helped corral a rather “unruly” pig on the run along Interstate 95.
State police say in a Facebook post they were alerted to the “uncooperative” pig along the interstate in Palmyra on Wednesday.
Police say the pig was spotted several times over the past week, but had managed to elude capture.
Authorities say Cpt. Rick Moody and Trooper Jeremy Caron moved the pig off the highway with the help of a town animal control officer.
When asked if police read the pig its Miranda rights, police jokingly responded “he waived the right to remain silent.”
No injuries were reported.
