Child care license suspended after child left on cold bus

GARDEN CITY (AP) — State officials have suspended a suburban Detroit child care center's license after a child was left unattended on a cold bus for 90 minutes.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs suspended the Jade Child Development Center's license, and it's now seeking to revoke the Garden City business' license.

MLive.com reports that the state agency found that the child was injured by being left unattended on a bus for about 90 minutes in cold weather.

The agency took the action after an investigation found violations of the Child Care Organizations Act and other rules that outline appropriate care and supervision of children.

Part of I-94 in Jackson County to honor slain prison guards

LANSING (AP) — A portion of Interstate 94 in Jackson County will honor two prison guards who were killed by inmates more than 30 years ago.

Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed designating part of I-94 as the "Corrections Officers Jack Budd and Josephine McCallum Memorial Highway."

Corrections Director Heidi Washington says the officers gave their lives protecting the state, and honoring their memory is a "great way to remind others of the sacrifice they made."

In 1987, McCallum was sexually assaulted and strangled by a prisoner at the then-State Prison of Southern Michigan. Later that year, Budd was stabbed by an inmate.

Police: Two dozen suspects stole $48K in government benefits

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police have charged 24 people they say were responsible for stealing nearly $50,000 in food stamp benefits.

Authorities say 22 suspects were charged with fraudulently obtaining assistance and 23 were charged with fraudulent use of food stamps.

According to police, two suspects were charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and another was charged with filing false documents.

Col. Ann Assumpico says the department opened the investigation after a Rhode Island Department of Administration analysis identified $48,966.12 in stolen benefits.

The suspects were taken into custody awaiting arraignment.

Just right: Bear family helps itself to chocolate inside car

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A hungry North Carolina bear and its three cubs were caught on video when they broke into a car to devour dozens of chocolate bars.

Lilly Thurmond, 16, provided WLOS-TV with cellphone video of the bears moving in and out of the Toyota Prius and eating about 50 bars meant for a school prom fundraiser.

She and her mother told the station they believe the bears opened an unlocked door on the car in the driveway of their wooded lot in Asheville.

They said the furry bandits left the inside of the car dirty and punctured some backseat cushions, but insurance has agreed to pay for the damage.

Her mother, Kim Peck, says the lesson is to lock car doors "because bears know how to open them up."
