State lawmakers OK permanent medical marijuana rules

LANSING (AP) — Michigan lawmakers have approved permanent medical marijuana licensing rules, including a provision to allow dispensaries to deliver the drug to cardholders' homes.

The regulations were passed Tuesday by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, a panel of legislators that oversees rules proposed by state agencies.

The regulations largely mirror emergency rules already in place, but the authorization of home delivery is new.

Provisioning centers will be able to deliver up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana per patient and do up to 10 deliveries at a time.

The state is in the midst of licensing medical marijuana businesses under a 2016 law.

Charges in failed Wayne County jail project dismissed

DETROIT (AP) — Misconduct charges tied to a mismanaged jail-building project in Detroit have been dismissed against two ex-Wayne County officials.

County Circuit Judge Vonda Evans’ order last week also dismisses neglect of duty charges against former chief financial officer Carla Sledge and former chief assistant corporation counsel Steven Collins.

They were accused in 2014 of giving false or misleading information about the project’s cost.

Prosecutors have not decided if Evans’ ruling will be appealed.

The building was partially constructed when county commissioners voted to cancel contracts after the project went $91 million over its $220 million budget in 2013.

A deal was approved in June for a new criminal justice center and jail in another location. A real estate development company received the unfinished jail site for a planned mixed use development.

Chicken rescue causes  bit of grief for officer

OSSINING, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer who saved a chicken from becoming a roaster is taking a ribbing from his fellow officers.

Body cam video released by the Ossining, New York, police shows the officer responding to a shed fire on Saturday.

He removed some propane tanks when he discovered the chicken.

The bird clucks as the officer carries the bird to safety. He told the owner, “I got your chicken.”

The police department wrote on Facebook, “Somewhere around the first day of field training some salty cop usually hits you with, ‘Kid, you wouldn’t believe what goes on around here if I told you.’”

The department says if you ever wanted to get a hard time from your co-workers, “be a hero...to a chicken.”
