Charges dropped against men in boyhood memory case
DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors are dropping murder charges against two Detroit men who were granted a new trial based on the boyhood memory of a man who witnessed his mother’s slaying almost 20 years ago.
Justly Johnson and Kendrick Scott have been in prison or jail for nearly 20 years. The Wayne County prosecutor's office said Wednesday it was dropping the case, four months after the state Supreme Court said the men deserved another trial.
Lisa Kindred was shot in a van on Mother’s Day in 1999. Her son, Charmous Skinner Jr., was 8 years old and also in the vehicle. His recollection of the shooter is different than the evidence offered at trial.
Skinner was never interviewed by police.
Inquiry closed for doctor who resigned amid Nassar probe
EAST LANSING (AP) — A Michigan State University doctor who resigned after learning the school was considering firing her because she didn’t disclose that USA Gymnastics was investigating disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar has been cleared in a state licensing inquiry.
The state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said Tuesday it couldn’t substantiate a violation by Brooke Lemmen and closed its investigation into her.
Lemmen’s attorney told the Lansing State Journal his client is happy to be cleared in the investigation. He says it’s “very good news.”
Lemmen was among several current or former MSU doctors or trainers who had been under licensing investigation by LARA.
Nassar worked for Michigan State and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. He is imprisoned for molesting athletes.
High court rejects Montana man’s rape conviction petition
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected the petition of a Montana man to review his conviction for the kidnap and rape of a 4-year-old girl on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.
The court denied without comment John Lieba Jr.’s request to review his case.
Lieba was sentenced last year to 42 years in prison after authorities said he chased down the young girl at night in a park, raped and strangled her and then left her for dead in an abandoned pickup truck.
Lieba’s attorneys argued that there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him on charges of kidnapping, aggravated rape and assault resulting in serious injury.
State trooper who stopped speeding van helps deliver baby
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Here’s one way to get out of speeding ticket: A North Carolina state trooper helped deliver a baby on the side of the road after pulling over a speeding van on the highway.
WRAL-TV reports that State Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Maynard pulled over a van going 85 mph late Saturday.
The couple in the van, Jimmy and Laura Baker, were headed to the hospital so she could give birth, but the baby started coming before they could get there.
Maynard helped deliver the baby at roadside, calling the experience both “scary” and “rewarding.”
Baby Halyn was later taken to a hospital. Jimmy Baker says his wife and their newborn are both doing well.
