Judge gets probation in hit-and-run crash case
MARINE CITY (AP) — A Macomb County judge accused of crashing into a man's car and driving away has been given a suspended jail sentence, probation and 100 hours of community service.
Roseville's 39th District Court Judge Catherine Steenland learned her punishment Friday in a St. Clair County courtroom. She earlier pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident where someone was injured and failing to report an accident.
Her lawyer Stephen Rabaut says she's accepted responsibility. A no-contest plea isn't an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing.
The crash occurred in 2017 in Roseville.
Groups oppose plantation exhibit set for Detroit museum
DETROIT (AP) — A coalition of community groups is opposing a planned Thomas Jefferson Monticello plantation exhibit coming to Detroit.
The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is expected to feature “Paradox of Liberty” in 2019.
The museum said in a statement that the exhibit will tell the story of Sally Hemings and other slaves on the Virginia plantation from their perspectives.
Jefferson was the third U.S. president. Most historians believe he had an intimate relationship Hemings and fathered some of her children.
Coalition for Black Legacy at the Charles H. Wright Museum member Gloria House said the exhibit is “totally inappropriate” and that “it seems highly insensitive” ... to “propose an exhibition that somehow tries to recast the history of the Jefferson plantation.”
UP river will be on a postage stamp in 2019
IRONWOOD (AP) — A Michigan river will be featured in a new set of postage stamps highlighting scenic rivers.
The Ontonagon River in the Upper Peninsula will be one of 12 stamps to be released in 2019. The Daily Globe in Ironwood reports the stamp shows a branch of the river in Gogebic County.
The newspaper says sections of the Ontonagon River were designated as part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers system in 1992. Forty-three miles are designated as wild, and 35 miles are listed as scenic.
Stamp services director Mary-Anne Penner says stamps highlighting history, entertainment and nature tell “America’s story.”
Chick-Fil-A fans brave snow for year of free sandwiches
CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Dozens of hardy souls braved hours of snow and wind for a year’s worth of free Chick-fil-A as the fast food chain opened its first Buffalo-area store.
The Cheektowaga restaurant opened its doors at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
As part of grand opening festivities, Chick-fil-A promised 52 chicken sandwiches to the first 100 guests in line, prompting some to pitch tents in the parking lot Wednesday with plans to spend the night despite snow and frigid temperatures.
But with snow piling up, Chick-fil-A announced it would award the winners 12 hours ahead of schedule — at 6 p.m. Wednesday, instead of 6 a.m. Thursday.
The National Weather Service says between 6 and 8 inches of snow fell on the Buffalo suburb from Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon.
