Businessman sentenced to prison in theft of plastic crates
DETROIT (AP) — A Michigan hauling company president who pleaded guilty to wire fraud after plastic crates valued at more than $2.9 million were sold to a recycling firm for about $460,000 has been sentenced to 33 months in prison.
The Justice Department says in a statement that Arshawn Hall learned his punishment last Thursday in Detroit federal court.
Hall’s RAMA Enterprise Inc. was hired to transport auto parts in the crates and return the empty crates.
The government says the crates were diverted elsewhere.
The Farmington man also pleaded guilty to willfully failing to file a 2012 federal income tax return on behalf of RAMA Enterprise.
A judge also ordered Hall to serve three years of supervised release, pay more than $2.9 million in restitution and pay more than $142,000 to the IRS.
Justices reject appeal over border wall
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from environmental groups trying to stop President Donald Trump from building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, even as other legal action against the wall is ongoing.
The justices on Monday left in place a ruling by a federal judge in San Diego who rejected challenges claiming that the Trump administration improperly waived laws requiring environmental and other reviews before construction can begin.
The judge in the San Diego case was Gonzalo Curiel.
Trump criticized Curiel during the presidential campaign for his handling of fraud allegations against now-defunct Trump University.
Trump had already proposed a border wall and suggested the Indiana-born judge’s Mexican heritage meant he wouldn’t be fair to Trump in the fraud lawsuit.
Beloved gift shop turtle celebrates 50th birthday
BRISTOL, N.H. (AP) — A turtle given to a bedridden little boy in New Hampshire back in 1968 has celebrated her 50th birthday with party hats, a sheet cake with the right number of candles and many well-wishers.
Diane the Turtle was given to Jim Tonner when he was 12 and being treated for hip arthritis at his home in Braintree, Massachusetts. Years later, Jim, and his twin brother, Brad Tonner, opened a gift shop in Bristol, which became Diane;s home. Her tank is surrounded by photos of store visitors.
On Saturday, the store was crowded with visitors singing “Happy Birthday” to Diane, who wore a tiny party hat.
The brothers have written and illustrated books about Diane and set up a turtle webcam in their shop.
