WMU-Cooley Law School's Lansing campus National Mock Trial Team placed in the top five during the William H. Daniels Mock Trial Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, on Nov. 16-17. The 16-team national invitational was hosted by Georgia State University (GSU) College of Law and the Georgia State Bar Association. WMU-Cooley's National Mock Trial Team members include Devin Blue, Mathew Hotchkiss, Anthony Scorzo, Gilbert Broderick, and coach Professor Anthony Flores.
WMU-Cooley's team swept the judges' ballots during the first two rounds of the competition, beating teams from Cumberland (Alabama) Law School and Michigan State University (MSU) College of Law. During Round One, Scorzo was selected as Best Advocate of the round on all three of the judges' ballots. Facing MSU in the second round, WMU-Cooley's Hotchkiss won Best Advocate on two ballots and Blue secured the third ballot.
During the third round, WMU-Cooley faced GSU, who finished the competition undefeated. The nearly four-hour round ended with GSU earning two of the three judges' ballots, keeping WMU-Cooley from advancing to the final rounds. WMU-Cooley's Broderick won the Advocate ballot during the round.
