Company in small town unveils plan to give millions to workers

LUDINGTON (AP) — A northern Michigan company is rewarding 200 employees with nearly $4 million in bonuses.

FloraCraft in Ludington makes foam products for the craft and floral industries. Owner Lee Schoenherr says the money will be based on years of service, but the average will be about $20,000 per worker in cash and 401(k) contributions.

Some longtime workers will get more than $60,000.

The first payments will be made in 2019. Mary Overla, an assistant production supervisor, told the Detroit Free Press the announcement “was very humbling” and she cried when she heard it.

Schoenherr bought the business from his uncle, who started it after World War II. He says he and his wife want to share their success with people whose "energy, passion and loyalty" inspire them every day.

Attorney: Deadly hotel freezer could lock someone inside

CHICAGO (AP) — The attorney for a woman suing a Chicago-area hotel over the death of her daughter in a walk-in freezer says someone could have locked the young woman inside.

Attorney Geoffrey Fieger told a news conference Tuesday that a button on the freezer door’s handle allows it to be locked, overriding a mechanism that would let someone inside get out.

The body of Kenneka Jenkins, 19, was found Sept. 10, 2017, in the freezer at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Rosemont. An autopsy determined the death was accidental from hypothermia.

The Chicago Tribune reports Jenkins’ mother, Tereasa Martin, is suing the hotel, a security company and a restaurant that was renting the space with the freezer for more than $50 million.

The hotel has said the lawsuit lacks merit.

Mom pins down man trying to steal SUV

NEW YORK (AP) — A mother taking her child to school says she stopped a man from stealing her car and held him down until New York City police arrived.

Tihisha Jones says she started her car with an automatic car starter before leaving her Bronx apartment Tuesday when her son saw a man in the SUV.

Jones told WNBC-TV she pulled the man out and dragged him to the ground. She said “he’s lucky I didn’t kill him.”

Jones said she was running on adrenaline and all she was worried about was her vehicle, which had been broken into twice before.

Police said the man has been charged with attempted grand larceny auto, attempted petit larceny and criminal possession of a weapon.

Inmate in hot water: Police find escapee soaking in hot tub

WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) — An escaped inmate is back in custody after being found soaking in a hot tub at a senior living community, still wearing her yellow jail outfit.

The Pike County Sheriff's Office says the woman fled while being booked on drug-possession charges.

She was captured by authorities several hours later when a 911 caller reported the woman sitting in the hot tub at a senior community's activity center in Waverly, roughly 60 miles south of Columbus.

There was no immediate explanation how the women got there. She was charged  with felony escape in addition to the initial charges for alleged heroin possession.
