Man says $252K seized from luggage was for nonprofit
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A Michigan man who had about $252,000 seized from his carry-on bag at a Charlotte, North Carolina, airport says the money was for humanitarian purposes.
The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that Robert Shumake has filed a claim to recover the cash, which authorities say was packaged in a way “consistent with drug trafficking.”
The money was seized in June when authorities found it stashed inside a shoe box.
Shumake says he works for the nonprofit International Human Rights Commission, and so has diplomatic immunity. He claimed the same protection when previously fighting authorities in court over cash seized at airports in Atlanta and Los Angeles.
But U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray says Shumake has a criminal history and isn’t with the nonprofit.
Shumake and his lawyer couldn’t be reached for comment.
Loans available for Michigan businesses after summer hail
LANSING (AP) — Small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives and private nonprofit organizations financially impacted by an Aug. 1 hailstorm in some parts of northern Michigan can apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
The U.S. Small Business Administration said the federal loans are being made available in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee and Wexford counties.
The agency says the working capital loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. The loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits.
Completed loan applications are due no later than Aug. 13, 2019.
Runaway cow caught on I-80 recovering at animal sanctuary
WANTAGE, N.J. (AP) — A cow bound for a slaughterhouse who led authorities on an hour-long chase along Interstate 80 in New Jersey before being captured is recuperating at an animal sanctuary.
The director of the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in northwestern New Jersey tells the New Jersey Herald the cow sustained cuts and scrapes from falling from the second floor of the trailer early Thursday near Paterson.
Mike Stura tells the newspaper the cow has received shots and been examined by a veterinarian. She will remain at the sanctuary if she is able to recover fully.
The cow has been named Brianna in honor of the police officer named Brian who alerted the sanctuary to the animal’s escape.
Dog returned one year after it was stolen
WALL, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man has been reunited with his dog, more than a year after the pooch was stolen from his car.
The dog-napping happened in Virginia when the owner was on vacation.
A few days ago the Yorkie was taken in as a stray by Richmond Animal Care and Control.
NJ.com reports the dog’s microchip showed its owner lived in Wall Township. The owner, identified only as John T., wasn’t able to drive to Virginia, so volunteers from the shelter drove the dog to New Jersey on Thursday.
