Governor signs directive seeking to help certain businesses
LANSING (AP) —Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive directive that's designed to help expand opportunities for certain small businesses and those businesses facing economic challenges.
The Democrat's office says that with the directive signed Friday the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget must work with other state departments, agencies and organizations representing small businesses to identify and reduce barriers for those businesses.
It seeks to boost purchases from them and reach more contracts with them.
The directive targets communities that have been cut off from capital and have experienced a lack of business growth.
Four-year-old credited with helping save her mother’s life — twice
WARREN (AP) — A Macomb Couny girl who only is four years old already is being credited with helping to save her mother's life twice.
Savannah Lavely's mother gets seizures that cause her to lose consciousness. Jessa Lavely had one of those seizures last year when Savannah was just three years old. They were out for a walk when Jessa Lavely collapsed, so her daughter ran home to get her grandparents to help.
Savannah was honored afterward by Warren's mayor. Then this past Wednesday, she took action again when her mother had a seizure. TV stations WJBK and WDIV report they were at home in Warren when it happened, so Savannah used their alarm system to summon emergency crews.
Restaurant removes sign over concerns it’s offensive
KEENE, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire restaurant that’s preparing to open has removed a sign advertising its name over concerns that it sounded like profanity.
The name of the Vietnamese restaurant in a public building next to City Hall in Keene is a play on a type of soup, which is spelled P-H-O, but is pronounced “fuh.” The restaurant calls itself by the name of the soup, followed by the words “Keene Great.”
City Manager Elizabeth Dragon said it’s intended to sound like profanity and that owner Isabelle Jolie didn’t get permission to hang any sign.
Jolie said she doesn’t think the name is offensive.
Dragon tells New Hampshire Public Radio the city wants Jolie to be successful, but that it has to strike a balance.
