Whitmer prohibits LGBT discrimination by state contractors

LANSING (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive directive to prohibit discrimination against LGBT people by state government, contractors and others, superseding an order that Gov. Rick Snyder signed just days before leaving office.

Whitmer’s directive, like Snyder’s, requires all recipients of state contracts, grants and loans to extend protections to their employees.

However, hers does not provide an exemption for religious organizations.

The Democrat signed the directive Monday at an LGBT community center in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale.

It clarifies that employment protections cover all state employees and prohibits discrimination in state services, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

LGBT advocates and civil rights groups are applauding Whitmer's move.

Official: Makeshift mannequins part of prison escape attempt

NEW HAVEN (AP) — Two prisoners at a state correctional facility could face attempted escape charges after officers found makeshift mannequins in their bunks.

The Detroit Free Press reports that an officer in a tower at the Macomb Correctional Facility in New Haven spotted the men walking toward a fence Saturday evening as other inmates headed to a chow hall.

Officials conducted an emergency prisoner count at the facility in New Haven and found the mannequins in the cell 24-year-old Chakaris Loury shared with 27-year-old Darious Culpepper.

Loury is serving 25 years for assault with intent to commit murder.

Culpepper is serving eight years for armed robbery.

State Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz tells the newspaper that sheets may have rolled up in the bunks to appear as people.

Arizona woman sent 159K texts to man she met on dating site

PHOENIX (AP) — A Phoenix woman accused of stalking a man met on a dating site and sending him more than 65,000 text messages apparently sent more than twice that many.

Jacqueline Ades sent a man more than 159,000 text messages — some of which were threatening — over the course of nearly 10 months, according to police records the Arizona Republic obtained via a public records request.

The two went on a single date.

The man, whose name has not been released, called the police after he found Ades parked outside his home in July 2017.

Paradise Valley officers escorted her off his property and that's when police say Ades began threatening the man.

One text read: "I'd make sushi outta ur kidneys n chopsticks outta ur hand bones."

In April 2018, Ades was arrested for trespassing inside his home while he was out of the country.

Ades has pleaded not guilty to charges of stalking and criminal trespassing.

Her trial was scheduled to begin Feb. 5.
