Wealthy businessman accused of stealing campaign signs
BLOOMFIELD HILLS (AP) — An elected official in suburban Detroit is charged with stealing the campaign signs of a candidate running for school board.
Stuart Sherr is a wealthy businessman and a member of the Bloomfield Hills City Commission. He’s accused of illegally removing the yard signs of Anjali Prasad, a former federal prosecutor who lost a bid last fall for the local school board.
Sherr, who had Prasad’s signs in the trunk of his Jaguar, has pleaded not guilty.
The Detroit Free Press reports that he told police he removed signs at the request of property owners, but property owners disputed his statement.
Sherr says the signs were a threat to safety.
Prasad says she lost about 90 signs before she went to police with home video of a theft.
Volunteer discovers $4,000 inside donated book in Phoenix
PHOENIX (AP) — Thousands of dollars found inside a donated book has been returned to the former owner.
KPNX-TV reports that volunteer Cathy McAllister was sorting books for a charity book sale in Phoenix last weekend when she found $4,000 in a chamber cut inside “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.”
The station says she initially thought the $100 bills were Monopoly money.
McAllister said the former owner also left a letter and an address label inside the book. The man’s family was contacted and the money returned.
McAllister said the man’s daughter asked him whether he’d done the same thing with other books. McAllister said she suspects the family went home and opened up every other book in the bookcase.
House call turns into horse call for police
INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a suburban Minneapolis resident reported a strange intruder in her basement. It was a horse.
Inver Grove Heights police arrived at the woman's home late one recent night to find a pale-colored horse walking through various rooms as officers watched through windows from the outside.
Police Sgt. Adam Wiederhoeft says the investigation is ongoing and it isn’t clear how the horse got into the house, but that the animal’s owner came by to remove it.
A message on the police department’s Facebook page read: “No horses or officers were hurt in this incident and the horse was safely returned to the corral!”
