Police plan to expand swabbing drivers for drugs in Michigan
LANSING (AP) — A program that had some police officers asking drivers to allow a swab of their mouth to determine if they’ve been using drugs is expected to be expanded to more parts of Michigan.
An initial one-year pilot program started in late 2017 in Berrien, Delta, Kent, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties. Police officers who are trained as drug recognition experts collected oral fluid if they suspected a driver is impaired by drugs. During the initial pilot program, it was used on 92 drivers.
Michigan State Police say the roadside test correlated well with lab and blood test results.
State police say a second pilot program including additional counties around Michigan is expected to start this fall.
Court says lawsuit by blind man can continue
LANSING (AP) — An appeals court says a blind man who was arrested at a 2015 celebration for a federal disabilities law outside Michigan’s Capitol can continue his lawsuit against state police.
The Detroit Free Press reports a federal judge in Grand Rapids earlier dismissed the suit alleging free speech and other violations by Joe Harcz and other demonstrators, but the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals recently revived parts of the case.
The event was held in Lansing to celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Police said they believed Harcz wanted to disrupt it.
The Genesee County man was accused of striking officers with his white cane.
Harcz said he was invited to the event. He was charged with resisting and obstructing police, but the case was dismissed.
Police: Thief steals liquor bottle worth $4K
SEEKONK, Mass. (AP) — Police are searching for a thief with expensive taste in Massachusetts.
Chris Gasbarro’s Fine Wine and Spirits in Seekonk says someone stole a $4,000 bottle of the Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac from its store.
The bottle was kept in a locked glass case, and security cameras captured a man either picking the lock or using a key to open the case.
The man tucked the bottle in his pants, used money to purchase a separate item, and left the store.
The store is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the man’s arrest.
