The Macomb County Bar Foundation is issuing a reminder that the deadline is just around the corner for three law school scholarships.
Rick Troy, executive director of the Macomb County Bar Association and the Macomb Bar Foundation, noted recently that the foundation has awarded more than $110,000 in such scholarships over the years and looks forward to awarding three more $3,000 scholarships this year.
The deadline for all applications is Sunday, March 17.
The Foundation Trustees Law School Scholarship is awarded to a second or third-year law student who demonstrates a commitment to serve or contribute to the Macomb County legal community, a need for financial assistance and high scholastic achievement.
Applicants must be enrolled as a law degree candidate at one of the following — Michigan State University, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, University of Michigan, University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University
The Kimberly M. Cahill Leadership Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a second or third-year law student who is currently enrolled in law classes at any accredited Michigan law school.
The recipient should demonstrate qualities of leadership and the ability to inspire and lead others, a need for financial assistance and an academic standing of 3.0 GPA or above.
The scholarship honors the memory of Kimberly M. Cahill, former president of the foundation, the MCBA, the State Bar of Michigan and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan. Cahill died in 2008.
The Philip F. Greco Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a second or third-year law student who demonstrates a commitment to serve or contribute to the Macomb County legal community, a need for financial assistance and a good academic standing (2.5 GPA or better).
Special consideration is given to non-traditional law students.
Applicants for this scholarship must be enrolled as a law degree candidate at an accredited Michigan Law School.
Greco, who founded a title company that bears his name, was a past MCBA president and one of the founders of the bar foundation.
Application packets for all scholarships must include a completed application, the candidate’s most recent law school transcript, a resume, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement in which the candidate discusses his/her interest in law, reason for applying for scholarship, career goals and any other pertinent information the scholarship committee might find useful.
Applications will be accepted at the foundation office (by mail or in person) — 40 N. Main, Suite 435, Mount Clemens, MI 48043 — or via email to RTroy@MacombBar.org.
Winners will be announced in the spring.
