Civil rights panel schedules meeting
The Michigan Civil Rights Commission (MCRC) was scheduled to meet today at 1 p.m. at the Lorenzo Cultural Center on the campus of Macomb Community College in Clinton Township.
Beginning with this public meeting, held in Room K-30 of Building K, all public comment will be held prior to the business before the commission, noted Dr. Arbulu V. Agustin, director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR).
“The commission has determined that this change will better inform their decision making on relevant agenda items by allowing the voices of Michigan citizens to be heard early in the process,” he said.
In addition to regular commission business, the MCRC will take testimony and discuss actions related to migrant workers in Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the operational arm of the commission, is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints.
Former candidate awaits sentencing in embezzlement case
PONTIAC (AP) — A former Democratic candidate for the Michigan House who authorities say embezzled about $150,000 when she served as treasurer of another campaign has pleaded no contest in the case.
Jennifer Suidan, 34, is scheduled to be sentenced April 16 in Oakland County Circuit Court after entering the plea earlier this month to a charge of embezzling $100,000 or more. A no contest plea isn’t an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
Suidan was accused of stealing money from the campaign of Andy Meisner, the Oakland County treasurer, over 18 months.
Meisner earlier said a “wrong has been done” to the people who donated to his campaign. Suidan was a candidate for the House in the 39th District and lost in November to a Republican.
Bank robber, 82, gets jail, home confinement
BENTON, Ill. (AP) — An 82-year-old man who says he was desperate when he robbed an Illinois bank has been sentenced to 10 weekends in jail.
Federal Judge Phil Gilbert told Arthur Bays that he’s never seen a criminal as old as him. He says he struggled with a sentence Thursday.
Bays had a toy gun in his waistband when he demanded money from a teller at State Bank of Whittington in Benton last July. He got $12,500.
Bays told the judge that he was talked into buying a new car after learning that it would cost $2,000 to fix the air conditioning on his vehicle. After five payments, he says he was broke.
The Southern Illinoisan reports that the prosecutor sought a prison term. Besides weekends in jail, Bays will spend six months on home confinement.
Thief steals 140 sap buckets in Vermont
ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — A sap bucket thief has brought a sour note to Vermont’s maple sugaring season.
Fred Hopkins tells MyNBC5 that someone took 140 of his sap buckets, a first for him.
Hopkins makes award-winning maple syrup at his home in the town of St. Albans and gifts it to friends and family.
He says he has since replaced many of the buckets that were located near a cemetery and the Franklin County Sportsman's Club.
St. Albans police are looking for the culprit.
