Judge puts former governor back in Flint water litigation
FLINT (AP) — A judge says former Gov. Rick Snyder can be sued by residents in the Flint water scandal, reversing a decision from last summer.
Residents claim Snyder violated their right to bodily integrity by repeatedly doing nothing as Flint used corrosive water that released lead from old pipes. Judge Judith Levy says a right to bodily integrity is a “fundamental interest” protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Levy says members of Snyder’s administration had warned that switching Flint to the Flint River “could lead to a potential disaster.” The city was under state management in 2014 and 2015. Snyder’s Department of Environmental Quality failed to require corrosion control.
Levy, a federal judge in Ann Arbor, is overseeing lawsuits related to the water crisis. She released a 128-page opinion Monday.
Snyder left office in January.
Supreme Court nixes anti-abortion group’s appeal over videos
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from an anti-abortion group that surreptitiously recorded Planned Parenthood employees.
The justices joined lower courts Monday in allowing Planned Parenthood’s racketeering and other claims against the Center for Medical Progress to proceed.
Two members of the group also are facing criminal charges in California over the secret recordings.
The center says its videos show Planned Parenthood employees illegally selling parts of aborted fetuses.
Planned Parenthood says the center surreptitiously accessed its conferences to gain meetings with its staff and create deceptively edited and false videos that were posted online.
Planned Parenthood denied wrongdoing in connection with its fetal tissue practices.
Nobody hurt when plane lands on street
SIGNAL HILL, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say nobody was hurt when a small plane landed on a street shortly after takeoff from Southern California's Long Beach Airport.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said Monday the pilot was the only person on board the Piper PA-28.
Gregor says the plane departed from the airport and landed for unknown reasons on a street about 1½ miles.
Television news helicopters showed the plane upright in lanes surrounded by police and firefighters.
The plane is registered to the Long Beach Flying Club and Flight Academy.
No kidding: Woman pulled over had baby goat in lap
MARLBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) — Police say they cited a driver who had a kid in her lap — the baby goat kind.
Marlborough police say they pulled the woman over on April Fool's Day when they saw her using her cellphone. They soon realized that she was driving without a valid license — and with the goat.
Police said the driver was a 60-year-old woman from Sullivan, New Hampshire. She was released on a citation for operating without a valid license.
Police posted the encounter on Facebook, with the comment, "I wish this was another April Fool's joke baaaht it's not."
