Over the past seven years, Muskegon County and the City of Muskegon have been teaming up to host the Muskegon County Recycling Events for Muskegon County residents. Each event is estimated to serve approximately 600 Muskegon County residents to remove problem waste from the waste stream. This service helps to reduce environmental impacts and provide Muskegon County residents a free outlet to dispose/recycle their unwanted and possibly harmful materials.
Muskegon County Department of Public Works (DPW) provides funding and coordination of these events. Since 2014 over 5,200 residents dropped off over 28,000 gallons of hazardous waste, 178,000 lbs. of electronics, 26,000 tires, and 53,000 lbs. of sensitive documents for shredding, all of which were treated and recycled. Trained volunteers, most of which are county employees, staff the event.
The 2019 Muskegon County Recycling Events will take place on Saturday, April 27 and October 19 from 9am-1pm at 1350 E. Keating Ave. for Muskegon County residents only (NO business waste).
The services will include: sensitive document destruction, collection of car and truck tires with or without the rims, collection of electronics (including tube and projection TVs and computer monitors), and household hazardous waste (including vehicle fluids, batteries, CFL light bulbs, florescent tubes, oil-based paints [NO latex paint], fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) collection for treatment and proper recycling.
Future events will take place on the 4th Saturday in April and the 3rd Saturday in October. Call Muskegon County Solid Waste at 231-724-6001 or visit www.co.muskegon.mi.us/767/Household-Hazardous-Waste for details. Also find the event on Facebook by visiting www.facebook.com/SustainableMuskegon/
Muskegon County will be coordinating five TIRE ONLY collection events throughout the county. Muskegon County DPW coordinates these events and partners with municipalities and organizations to make these free to ALL Muskegon County residents (NO business waste) at any location. Since 2014, these events alone have collected more than 46,000 tires from residents.
This year they will be held at the dates and locations listed to the right. These events are funded by the 2019 Scrap Tire Grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. For more information contact the Muskegon County Solid Waste at 231-724-6002 or search for Sustainable Muskegon on various social media platforms to stay connected.
