Michigan admits to errors in state prison death counts

LANSING (AP) — The Michigan Department of Corrections has acknowledged errors in its state prison death counts after a newspaper investigation revealed the agency hasn’t been accurately or consistently tracking the deaths as it’s federally mandated to do.

The Detroit Free Press’ analysis of open records comes after Michigan reported to the federal government that 2018 saw the highest rate of deaths in Michigan prisons in 25 years.

The newspaper says state lawmakers wouldn’t know about the spike because the department's 2018 statistical report hasn’t been published on its website yet. The investigation also found it has excluded some deaths from its reporting to the Legislature without notifying lawmakers.

A department spokesman said reports submitted to the federal government are accurate, but prison death counts in its annual reports are incorrect.

Report: Teachers requested help for bullied student

LANSING (AP) — A report says a Lansing School District internal investigation following a 13-year-old student's suicide shows the boy was bullied in school and district officials received pleas for help from the boy's mother and a request for intervention from his teachers.

The Lansing State Journal reports that the investigation was conducted by a school public safety officer after the Everett High School eight-grader's death in January and and was submitted to school officials in late March.

The 121-page investigation report obtained by the newspaper doesn't address what action, if any, an assistant principal took regarding the teachers' request for intervention after they noticed a change in the boy's behavior in the months before his death.

Police: Bank robber used oblivious dad as getaway driver

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine say a man who robbed a bank used his unwitting father as a getaway driver.

An affidavit written by a police detective says Keith Tilton dropped his 39-year-old son, Joseph Donald Tilton, at a Lewiston bank, believing his son needed to cash a check. In the few minutes he was inside, police say Joseph Tilton actually robbed the bank.

After dropping his son off in a different part of Lewiston, Keith Tilton drove past the bank, and was stopped by police who had the getaway car's description. Keith Tilton isn't charged, as police don't think he knew what was happening.

The Sun Journal reports Joseph Tilton is charged with felony robbery, accused of stealing $620.

Woman attacked by bees after hive falls on her head

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona woman is recovering from more than 20 bee stings after heavy winds blew a hive off a tree and it landed on her head.

Firefighters in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe say it happened as the woman picked up her child from daycare.

Officials say the woman happened to be walking under the tree where the hive was when wind blew it off.

They say the woman was stung on and around her head. She opted to have her husband drive her to a hospital.
