Lusk Albertson, a Michigan-based education law firm, has awarded its “LAunch Scholarships” to four graduating high school students. Each of the students will receive $2,500 from the firm to assist with college costs.
Lusk Albertson established the LAunch Scholarship to recognize high academic achievement, community involvement, and exceptional leadership qualities exemplified by high school seniors within school districts represented by the firm.
This year, the firm received nearly 300 applications from highly-qualified students throughout Michigan. The Selection Committee awarded scholarships to:
• Jake Baker – Theodore Roosevelt High School (Wyandotte Public Schools)
• Mikayla Fellman – West Bloomfield High School (West Bloomfield Public Schools)
• Karalina Kulis – Lakeland High School (Huron Valley Public Schools)
• Megan Ter Haar – Jenison High School (Jenison Public Schools)
This fall, Jake Baker will attend Wayne State University to study mechanical engineering and music. Baker, his class Valedictorian, has demonstrated leadership throughout his time at Roosevelt High including serving a class president, co-captain of the cross-country team and a member of the varsity golf team, varsity swim team and the National Honor Society. An accomplished musician, he is the first trumpet player in the school’s symphony band and participant in jazz band, marching band, concert band, and a soprano cornet player in the Motor City Youth Brass Band. Baker even compiled a five-piece brass band ensemble to play for residents at a local nursing home.
West Bloomfield High School senior Mikayla Fellman will pursue her passion for working with youth at the University of Michigan while majoring in education, with hopes of becoming a teacher. She has already begun to hone her teaching skills serving as a summer vacation bible school and religious formation class teacher. She also engages in mentorship through the peer mentorship program for incoming freshmen at West Bloomfield High School, where she was recognized with the “Hidden Treasure” award. In addition to her role as student government president and founding member of the Literary Garden Club, she actively assembles and distributes care packages of essential items to Metro Detroit’s homeless population.
Karalina Kulis will attend the University of Notre Dame this fall. While she has always been passionate about studying dentistry, she is keeping an open mind about the options that she will be presented with when she arrives in South Bend. Already active in the community, Kulis is a teen leader volunteer with Fleece and Thank You charities which organizes blanket-making events to benefit sick children, as well as a volunteer with PB & J Charities, which helps homeless and underserved individuals in Detroit. Kulis also holds the impressive distinction of having earned multiple varsity letters, participating on Lakeland High School’s varsity basketball, varsity track and varsity volleyball teams. She has been named a national AP Scholar with Distinction from The College Board.
Megan Ter Haar will attend Harvard College this fall to study public health and statistics, with a goal of working for a government agency to study outbreaks and epidemics. An advocate for science and STEM education, she is a competing member of the Jenison High School Science Olympiad team and serves as coach for the junior high team. She is also president of the Girls in STEM club which encourages young women to pursue STEM education. Ter Haar is also a member of the Grand Rapids Museum Watershed Team where she partnered with a council of students to design a watershed exhibit focused on public education.

Since 2012, Lusk Albertson has awarded more than $45,000 in scholarships to high school seniors.
