Flint misdemeanor will stand for now against ex-health chief

FLINT (AP) — A judge overseeing a major Flint water case has declined to dismiss a misdemeanor charge against Michigan's former health director.

Judge Joseph Farah says Michigan court rules prevent him from dismissing a charge of willful neglect of duty at this stage of the case. He says Nick Lyon can renew his argument after evidence is heard at trial.

Any trial would be months away. Lyon also is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of two people who had Legionnaires' disease during the Flint water crisis.

Farah plans to decide by June 14 whether those charges and another felony will stick.

Flint used the Flint River in 2014-15 but didn't treat it to reduce corrosion. The system became contaminated with lead and bacteria.

Librarian gets $90,000 after fraud case tossed

LAINGSBURG (AP) — A mid-Michigan librarian is getting $90,000 as part of a settlement after allegations of fraud against her were dismissed.

The city of Laingsburg announced the settlement with 60-year-old Sandra Chavez of Owosso in a news release and apologized. The Lansing State Journal on Monday reported the settlement’s financial terms, which it obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Chavez had sued alleging violations of the state’s whistleblower protection act after she was charged with false pretenses, malicious destruction of police property and larceny.

She was accused of falsifying her time sheet and damaging a police camera set up to observe her attendance.

Charges were dismissed in July. The city said it determined she didn’t “defraud, cheat, or engage in time card fraud.”

Failed escape from jail activates sprinklers

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Investigators in San Antonio say a man originally arrested on a trespassing count tried to escape through the ceiling of his cell but was caught after setting off some sprinklers.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says Matthew Fields of New Waverly was being held on the initial count pending other charges. Authorities say Fields is expected to face escape and criminal mischief charges, plus assault on a public servant.

Two deputies suffered minor injuries pursuing the 24-year-old Fields, who was booked Tuesday.

Fields never left the secure jail area. He was located in the infirmary after allegedly climbing into the ceiling of his cell, getting into a stairwell and opening a sprinkler valve. Parts of the basement flooded.

Eight trapped ducklings rescued from storm drain

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Firefighters have rescued eight ducklings from a storm drain on the University of Connecticut campus.

The school says bystanders walking near the chemistry building called the fire department after noticing a mother duck and two ducklings crying outside the drain.

The school says a firefighter attached to a safety rope used a ladder to reach six of the eight ducklings and bring them out.

The other two had made their way down a drain pipe. Crews lured those two out using a cord attached to small dish filled with Rice Krispies.
