State police search home of Macomb County prosecutor
MACOMB TOWNSHIP (AP) — State police have searched the home of the Macomb County prosecutor in an investigation of how his office spent money.
Investigators on a ladder outside Eric Smith's home removed a surveillance camera from under a gutter Tuesday. Lt. Darren Green says the four-hour search in Macomb Township is part of learning how Smith spent money from forfeited assets tied to alleged crimes.
Smith insists he has nothing to hide.
Many county officials have raised questions about how his office has spent thousands of dollars. Records show the money was used to support certain charities and to pay for credit card bills and other expenses.
Police searched his office in Mount Clemens last month.
Man convicted in infected body parts probe loses appeal
DETROIT (AP) — An appeals court has affirmed the conviction of a Detroit-area man who was accused of supplying infected cadavers and body parts for medical training.
Arthur Rathburn argued federal prosecutors treated him unfairly at trial by showing photos of frozen heads and unsanitary lab conditions. The court said the photos were “potentially unpleasant” but still relevant to the government’s case.
Rathburn, a Grosse Pointe Park resident, was convicted of fraud and shipping hazardous materials. Investigators say he regularly provided body parts to medical groups for seminars but didn’t disclose the parts came from people with hepatitis
Rathburn was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Whitey Bulger jailhouse letters show will to live
BOSTON (AP) — Jailhouse letters from late Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger highlight his will to live despite deteriorating health including eight heart attacks.
The letters provided to The Boston Globe by a woman he corresponded with appear to contradict federal officials who have said Bulger’s health had dramatically improved, making him eligible for a transfer to a West Virginia prison where he was killed.
Bulger was 89 when he was fatally beaten last October. Other inmates are under suspicion.
In one letter, Bulger wrote “Don’t worry about me ... I’m too mean to die.”
He also wrote he wanted to live long enough to again see his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, with whom he spent 17 years on the run before their 2011 capture.
Woman escapes with cat from car that plunged into river
BLACKSTONE, Mass. (AP) — A woman was able to save herself and her cat after the car they were riding in plunged into a Massachusetts river.
Blackstone Fire Chief Michael Sweeney says the woman had just picked up her cat from the groomer when she crashed the car into the Blackstone River.
Sweeney says the woman grabbed the cat and climbed out the window before the car sank into the water. The cat was in a pet carrier.
The woman in her 60s was taken to the hospital to be treated for cuts on her hand.
Sweeney tells WCVB-TV that the woman is a “spunky lady.”
