High court rejects challenge over transgender bathrooms

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will not take up a challenge to a Pennsylvania school district’s policy allowing transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their sexual identity.

The justices on Tuesday rejected an appeal from students who argued that allowing transgender students to use the same facilities violated their right to privacy.

The court’s order leaves in a place a federal appeals court ruling that held that the Boyertown School District, about 45 miles northeast of Philadelphia, could continue to allow transgender students the choice of what facilities to use.

The students are represented by the conservative Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom.

State Police sergeant saves girl from path of car

HARRISVILLE (AP) — A State Police sergeant is being credited with saving a two-year-old girl’s life by snatching her from the path of an oncoming dump truck.

Sgt. Joe Richards was on patrol recently in northern Michigan’s Alcona County when he saw the girl in the roadway.

Dashcam video posted on Twitter by state police shows Richards rushing over to the child and scooping her up. Police say the truck driver slammed on the brakes while trying to avoid hitting her.

The girl’s mother, who lives nearby, told state police said she had briefly lost sight of her daughter. Richards returned the child unharmed to her mother.

College attracts people who want to wire the future

ALPENA (AP) — What’s hot at a northern Michigan community college? Climbing power poles.

Alpena Community College reports a two-year waiting list for climbing courses in the school’s utility technology program. Classes are full for next fall and fall 2020 at 60 students each.

A school official told The Alpena News that students are advised to take general education courses or complementary classes while they wait to get into utility technology.

The program prepares students to construct or repair electricity, phone and TV distribution systems.

Snake slithers out of toilet, bites man on arm

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a ball python slithered out of a toilet and bit a South Florida man on the arm.

Coral Springs police spokesman Chris Swinson said the man was treated at the scene after the four-foot snake bit him when he lifted the toilet seat on Sunday morning. The snake is nonvenomous.

Swinson told news outlets the snake didn't belong to the man and it was unclear how it got into the apartment.

The South Florida SunSentinel reports the Coral Springs Humane Society took the snake to a veterinarian's office.

Over the years other creatures have found their way into toilets in South Florida, including an iguana freed by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue in March.
