Marijuana legalization, bullying, and LGBT issues. How have each of these developments changed the landscape of employment law during the past year? The Employment Law Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association has assembled a panel of experts to highlight significant legal developments in these areas, offer practical strategies, and provide insight into future trends.
A program titled “Employment Law Year in Review: Health and Safety in the Workplace” will take place on Tuesday, June 25 at 8 a.m. at the Oakland County Bar Association in Bloomfield Hills.
Aaron V. Burrell, Esq., of Dickinson Wright, will discuss the changes in both medical and recreational marijuana use and what employers can and should do to address these changes. He also will discuss the options, approaches and best practices for employers and provide predictions of the future as the nation moves through uncharted territory of cannabis acceptance and use.
Wayne State Law School Professor Delores Korb Mayer will provide an overview of bullying in the workplace, including the difference between harassment and bullying, possible Title VII violations and the keys to prevention of bullying in the workplace.
Benjamin M. Low, Esq., of Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss, will discuss how employers are monitoring the social media accounts of current and prospective employees, and how such monitoring can expose employers to potential liability under common law privacy rights and state and federal laws He will also discuss employer social media policy best practices.
Timothy Cordes, Esq., Cordes Law PLLC, will provide an overview of LGBT issues in employment and discuss practical implications for employees and employers. He will analyze transgender issues and challenges for employers from the perspective of the EEOC, lessons learned from recent filings and cases, erosion of the binary construct of gender, ending the great bathroom debate, and predictions for the future.
