Deal might be near in Eastpointe voting rights case
EASTPOINTE (AP) — The city council in Eastpointe is meeting to discuss a possible settlement in a federal lawsuit over the rights of black voters.
The U.S. Justice Department sued Eastpointe in 2017, saying it should elect council members by district rather than citywide. Blacks made up 30 percent of the population in the last census but only one council member is black.
Eastpointe’s website says the council was scheduled to discuss the case in closed session Tuesday afternoon.
The government won a key procedural decision in March when federal Judge Terrence Berg said the case will go to trial or be settled.
Kalamazoo votes to allow needle exchanges with city approval
KALAMAZOO (AP) — The city of Kalamazoo is moving forward on efforts to allow the distribution of clean needles to help curb the spread of disease among intravenous drug users.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the Kalamazoo City Commission voted Monday on an amendment to reverse a ban on such programs, which offer clean needles and liquid that can be used to inject drugs.
Prior approval must be sought before an organization begins operating an exchange program.
Nancy King, founding member of Southwest Michigan Families Against Narcotics, says needle exchanges can help keep people alive.
Her daughter died of a drug overdose in 2012.
Family discovers graduation cake made of plastic foam
PASADENA, Texas (AP) — A Texas family could have used a saw instead of a knife to slice a graduation cake from Walmart that was made of plastic foam.
Marsy Flores says the retail giant's store in Pasadena, Texas, had lost her order for a two-tier cake that she wanted for her daughter’s graduation party. She says the manager told her to pick any other cake on display and the store added a picture to the frosting.
All was well until it was time to cut the cake and they discovered plastic foam under the frosting.
She returned to the store where a manager gave her a $60 gift card for the value of the cake, another gift card and a real cake.
In a statement, Walmart said it was “the result of a misunderstanding.”
Guacamole-loving gator crashes couple’s date by Florida lake
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A hungry alligator crashed a picnic date by a Florida lake and gobbled down an entire bowl of guacamole.
Taylor Forte had planned a picnic Thursday for her fiancé Trevor Walters at Lake Alice, before Walters was to leave for the Marines.
Walters told WGFL they were shocked and ran away from the blanket when the animal sprinted onto the beach. First, it ate a block of cheese, then some salami, half a watermelon and a pound of grapes.
Walters said the “worst part" was watching the gator consume a big bowl of guacamole. He says the reptile devoured the bowl as well.
