Area Agency on Aging receives Social Justice Grant

The Region 2 Area Agency on Aging’s Safe Haven Program has been awarded a Social Justice Grant from the Queen of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Jackson. The grant funds will be used to provide short-term emergency housing to older adults and adults with disabilities who need to leave an abusive living situation while they get the support needed to find long-term options.

Because of the high need for this program, housing funds allotted for the year had already been used.

“With this grant, we will be able to continue to provide emergency housing for vulnerable adults who need to quickly leave unsafe situations. We are very grateful,” said Angie Shepherd, Elder Abuse Victims Specialist Program Manager.

Region 2 Area Agency on Aging was established in 1974 and is a not-for-profit agency serving older adults and adults with disabilities in Jackson, Hillsdale and Lenawee Counties. For additional information, call (800) 335-7881 or visit www.r2aaa.net.

In additional news, Queens Church also provided a grant of $750 to go towards a backpack sponsorship for the Back to School Blast Community Resource Fair, 3 to 7 p.m., Aug. 16 at CP Federal City Square, Blackman Park, 212 W. Michigan Ave. This is the second year the Back to School Blast has partnered with Queens Church; other partners include The First United Methodist Church, City of Jackson Human Relations Commission, and the Center for Family Health. This year’s goal is to serve 1,000 children with haircuts, vision screenings, underwear/socks, and backpacks.

To sponsor clothing, entertainment or food at the fair, call 517-581-8435.
