Marc Mauer, executive director of the Sentencing Project in Washington, D.C., discussed “The Sentencing Project on Ending Perpetual Punishment” at Wayne State University Law School on Friday, July 12.
The event was presented by the American Friends Service Committee and the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne Law. Mauer recently published a book titled “The Meaning of Life: The Case of Abolishing Life Sentences” and spoke on ending the perpetual punishment of America’s prisoners.
“In the book, we look at the explosion in the number of life sentences in America,” noted Mauer. “Today, one of every seven people in prison serving a life in prison term, in many cases, they are still incarcerated long after the time they present any significant threat to public safety.
This comes at great cost, both financially and in the terms of human cost, and becomes counterproductive for public safety purposes.”
