Man under watch by federal agents pleads guilty to lying

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) — A young western Michigan man whose mental health and interest in guns led authorities to place a tracking device on his car has pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents.

Aaron Fein, 24, of Grand Rapids Township appeared in federal court last week. He’s been in custody since his arrest in May.

Fein got the attention of authorities last August when Canada turned him away at a border crossing because of a lack of documents. During a screening on the U.S. side, agents found items related to jihad and making bombs.

The government says Fein, a University of Michigan engineering graduate, had a notebook at home with chemical equations and a list of bomb supplies. In May, agents discovered electronic components that could have been used to make explosives.

Statue of slain civil rights activist dedicated in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — A statue of a civil rights activist who was slain in Alabama during a 1965 voting rights march has been dedicated at the Detroit park that bears her name.

The statue unveiled Tuesday shows Viola Liuzzo walking barefoot — with shoes in one hand — and a Ku Klux Klan hood on the ground behind her. Sculptor Austen Brantley, who memorialized the white activist from Detroit, says Liuzzo's life "tells us ... to take action in our community and our nation."

Liuzzo, a 39-year-old mother of five, drove from Detroit to Alabama to join 25,000 others in support of a march led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. She was driving fellow activists between Montgomery and Selma when she was fatally shot by Ku Klux Klan members in another car.

High court to hear ‘Bridgegate’ appeal in early 2020

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The legal saga from New Jersey’s most notorious traffic jam will stretch into next year.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in the ‘Bridgegate’ case in early 2020.

The high court decided last month to hear the appeal of Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni, two former associates of former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

They were convicted of orchestrating traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge in September 2013, allegedly to punish a mayor who wouldn’t endorse Christie. Christie wasn’t charged.

Thieves steal three mannequins wearing designer clothes

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police say three thieves smashed a display window of a high-end department store and stole three mannequins dressed from head to feet in designer clothes.

Police say the theft occurred early Wednesday at the Neiman Marcus store on Chicago's Magnificent Mile.

They say three people wearing hoodies pulled up to the store, smashed the window, threw the three mannequins wearing expensive clothes including shoes and bags into the back of an SUV and fled. At least two arms from the mannequins fell off during the theft and were left lying on the ground amid broken glass.
