Man released in boyhood memory case sues Detroit police
DETROIT (AP) — One of two Detroit men who were imprisoned for nearly 20 years has filed a federal lawsuit seeking $100 million saying Detroit police framed them in a 1999 slaying.
The Detroit News reports Justly Johnson's lawsuit says two police sergeants coerced two teenagers into falsely implicating him and Kendrick Scott.
Prosecutors in November dropped murder charges against them, four months after the state Supreme Court said the men deserved another trial based on the boyhood memory of a man who witnessed his mother's slaying.
Lisa Kindred was shot in a van on Mother's Day in 1999. Charmous Skinner Jr. was 8 years old and also in the vehicle. His recollection of the shooter was different than the evidence offered at trial.
Organizations get grants to promote accurate census count
DETROIT (AP) — Nearly $1 million in grants have been awarded to Detroit-area organizations seeking to promote and support a fair and accurate 2020 U.S. Census count.
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan says the grants range from $7,000 to $75,000. Funding runs through August 2020.
The foundation’s Southeast Michigan Counts is a strategic effort to foster regional participation in the 2020 census. It says organizations receiving funding will work to promote awareness and action by historically undercounted populations such as communities of color, low-income households, immigrants, and young children.
Foundation President Mariam Noland says accurate census counts are essential for federal funds that support educationand services for communities.
Man reunites with $23K found in recycling facility
EUREKA, Calif. (AP) — A man who accidentally tossed $23,000 into the recycling bin reunited with his life savings recently after a worker at a recycling facility in California spotted a shoebox stuffed with money.
When the man from Ashland, Oregon, realized his mistake, the recycling bin had already been emptied into a truck bound for the sorting facility in Humboldt County.
The facility's general manager told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat most of the recyclables from the truck had been sorted by the time the man contacted Recology. Workers were nonetheless told to be on the lookout for the box.
Someone spotted the box down the sorting line Friday and recovered all but $320. The money somehow stayed in the box during the 200-mile trip to the facility.
10,000 bottles of beer on the road: German truck loses load
BERLIN (AP) — Police in Germany say a truck carrying crates of beer lost part of its load, spilling about 10,000 bottles onto a road.
Mannheim police say that volunteer firefighters from two nearby towns and a local civil defense team took part in the salvage operation, but an estimated $13,330 worth of beer was lost in the recent crash.
Police said the truck driver is being investigated for failing to properly secure his load.
