Officer on leave after apparent Klan document seen at home

MUSKEGON (AP) — A white police officer in western Michigan is on paid administrative leave after an apparent Ku Klux Klan document was seen framed on a wall of his home.

The Muskegon Police Department opened an internal investigation after Robert Mathis, who is black, posted on Facebook that he saw the document while touring the officer’s Holton-area home, which was for sale. He said he also saw Confederate flags at the house.

City Manager Frank Peterson said Officer Charles Anderson, who has been on the force more than 20 years, is on leave indefinitely.

Anderson told MLive.com he was advised not to comment.

Doors of church in west Michigan spray-painted with grafitti

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) — Officials are working to determine who is responsible for graffiti found spray-painted on doors of a Catholic church.

A statement released by Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Grand Rapids says symbols including two pentagrams surrounded by circles were found Thursday along with the numbers “666” and what appears to be an attempted upside-down cross.

Pastor Robert Sirico wants the person or people responsible to come forward and “allow me to have a conversation with them about this incident.”

No damage was found inside the church. The graffiti was covered with paper after it was discovered.

Suit alleging bias against whites, men at Harvard dismissed

BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Harvard Law Review discriminates against whites and men when selecting its student editors and articles.

The judge’s Thursday decision says the suit failed to identify anyone who was harmed by Harvard’s policies.

An anti-affirmative action group in Texas filed the suit in 2018, and a second group joined in January. Both say at least one of their members is a Harvard law student, but none was identified.

The suit challenged a “holistic review” used to pick 18 of the journal's 48 editors. The review can consider race and gender, among other factors.

One group filed a similar suit against New York University. It’s still pending.

Man takes golf cart on wild ride into Florida Walmart store

GIBSONTON, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a man took his golf cart on a wild ride through a Walmart store, terrorizing shoppers and ignoring deputies’ orders to stop before crashing into a cash register.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's investigators say they were summoned to the store near Tampa on Thursday, where they found Michael Dale Hudson blocking the liquor store entrance with his golf cart.

The Tampa Bay Times reports he was demanding to speak to a manager.

As deputies spoke to Hudson, they say he suddenly drove toward the store's main entrance. Customers jumped out of the way as he barreled through the door. He raced toward the checkout area, hitting several customers.

He was jailed on multiple charges, including aggravated battery.
