Hundreds at Detroit gun-control rally urge Congress to act
DETROIT (AP) — Hundreds of people attended a weekend rally in Detroit to call on Congress to tighten the nation's gun laws following a recent string of mass shootings.
The crowd converged downtown on Sunday, urging passage of federal legislation mandating background checks before gun sales.
The rally was one of many held nationwide since the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio and Northern California.
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell noted that the rally followed an eight-hour period in which eight people were shot in Detroit, one fatally. She told the gathering: "We've got to do something."
The rally was organized by the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Students Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
No more prison time for woman who gave birth in custody
TRAVERSE CITY (AP) — A northern Michigan woman who was sentenced to prison because a judge believed she would use drugs while pregnant won't face additional time behind bars.
Samantha Hughes appeared in court Friday for a new sentence for a probation violation, weeks after the state appeals court released her from prison. The court said Grand Traverse County Judge Thomas Power showed "extreme bias" in locking her up last December.
Power said he was concerned that Hughes would use drugs while pregnant. She gave birth while in custody in July.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that a different judge, Kevin Elsenheimer, sentenced Hughes to time served.
Mackinac Bridge announces date to stop taking tokens for tolls
ST. IGNACE (AP) — The Mackinac Bridge Authority says will no longer accept bridge tokens for tolls beginning Sept. 10.
The authority last week announced the date. It decided last month to end their use in toll lanes because of declining use.
Executive Secretary Kim Nowack says the authority currently only see two or three customers use tokens to pay the toll each day. Most customers pay tolls with cash, MacPass cards or credit cards.
Nowack says customers can redeem leftover tokens at the bridge office or hold on to them as keepsakes.
The authority has issued tokens over the years available in rolls of 24. Commemorative token sets of two are still available for sale.
Officials seize marijuana mixed with jalapeño peppers
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Officials say they seized $2.3 million worth of marijuana mixed in with a shipment of jalapeño peppers at a Southern California port.
A Customs and Border Protection K-9 unit alerted officers to a shipment of peppers Thursday at the Otay Mesa cargo facility in San Diego.
A CBP news release says officers discovered more than 7,500 pounds of marijuana in the peppers' pallets.
Officials said it was the second large seizure of marijuana there within days. The Tuesday before, authorities seized more than 10,600 lbs of marijuana in a shipment of plastic auto parts.
