36th District Court donates 180 backpacks and supplies to local outreach facilities
During the entire month of July, the 36th District Court judges, magistrates and staff donated just over 180 backpacks filled with the fundamental school supplies. The backpacks were donated to local outreach facilities who regularly provide shelter and assistance to mothers with school-aged children.
“This is the second year we dedicated the month of July to collecting backpacks for our $5 Friday Jean Days Program,” said Chief Judge Nancy M. Blount. “This year we wanted the donations to go to local outreach facilities who provide much needed services to parents and children in Detroit.”
“We are always looking for ways to give back to the community in a positive manner,” said Court Administrator Kelli Moore Owen. “Since often times these types of facilities are overlooked when organizations host a backpack drive, we had our probation director, Wright Wade, who is also the chairperson of our Public Service Committee, contact local facilities to first determine if there was a need. We received a resounding, yes, response.”
“We are very thankful to our team and to our vendors Arrow Office Supply and Image Office Supply for their generous donations,” added Blount.
The backpacks were delivered by the court to Positive Images, Naomi’s Nest, and the Salvation Army Harbor Light. The court is hopeful that this small gesture will enable these children to start their school year out on the right foot and with the essentials they need to grow, learn and succeed.
Expungement forum and legislative update offered Sept. 21
On Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m., Pastor Myron Jenkins of the Biblical Faith Ministry Center, attorney Robyn L. McCoy of McCoy & Associates PLLC, and the Michigan Children’s Law Center are collaborating to bring an “Expungement Forum” with Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Deborah Thomas and a “Legislative Update” with State Representative Issac Robinson and Former State Representative Mary Waters to the Biblical Faith Ministry Center located at 20118 Schoolcraft in Detroit. This event is free and open to the public.
McCoy, who is a Partner of McCoy & Associates, PLLC and an educational advocate and attorney with the Michigan Children’s Law Center, said that “it is important that we educate people on how to redeem themselves & set aside their criminal convictions and that we do what is necessary to expand the expungement statutes, so that more people are given the opportunity to clear their records, get a job and become productive citizens.”
Jenkins, founder of the Biblical Faith Ministries, a nondenominational and non-profit ministry, said that his church is “committed to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world” and “making sure that the general public has access to resources that will help them to redeem themselves.” Biblical Faith Ministries is a 501(C)(3) organization with church services every Sunday at 12:30pm.
