POWER Act Panel Presentation to take place Sept. 4
The U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan will host a POWER Act Panel Presentation Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at Wayne County Community College District located at 1001 W. Fort Street, Room 236, in Detroit.
The POWER Act (Pro Bono Work to Empower and Represent Act of 2018, P.L. 115-237) requires each judicial district within the judiciary to hold an annual event to encourage the legal community to provide pro bono services to survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The program also is designed to make domestic violence victims aware that pro bono legal assistance is available.
The Sept. 4 panel will consist of U.S. District Judge Marianne O. Battani, Wayne County Circuit Judge Melissa Anne Cox, Lakeshore Legal Aid CEO Ashley Lowe and Stephanie Shaull, a social worker and domestic violence specialist for the City of Detroit.
Light refreshments will be provided.
U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims Oral Argument at Detroit Mercy Law
The U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims will hold oral argument on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 2:00 p.m. at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, 651 East Jefferson Ave., Detroit, MI 48226.
The event presents an opportunity for law students and members of the legal community to see experienced veterans law practitioners argue before a three-judge panel of the court. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

FBA Eastern District of Michigan Chapter to host Legal Ethics Seminar Sept. 25
The Federal Bar Association Eastern District of Michigan Legal Ethics Committee will hold a lunch seminar from 12-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25 in the Detroit Room of the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd. in Detroit.
The seminar will highlight important ethical concerns that all attorneys may come across in their practices, including, among other topics, inherent risks of improper IOLTA account use; how to identify and address potential client conflicts; and how to avoid ethical pitfalls when conducting discovery on a case that has witnesses or fact patterns that overlap with a prior case. WSU Professor Peter Henning and Attorney Grievance Commission Staff Attorney Sarah Lindsey will be panelists for the program. Lynn Helland, the executive director of the Judicial Tenure Commission, will moderate the discussion. Lunch is available for purchase. For the seminar, register by September 24.
