National immigrant advocacy conference planned in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — A national conference focused on immigrant and refugee advocacy is planned for next month in Detroit.

The 12th annual National Immigrant Integration Conference is scheduled for Oct. 20-22 at the TCF Center, formerly the Cobo Center.

Organizers say the conference supports naturalization, voting and the pursuit of public office by new Americans, as well as sharing strategies to counter what they call "racist rhetoric and policies" targeting immigrants.

The conference's "New American Dreams" platform includes actions aimed at protecting immigrants and refugees.

Organizers have invited 2020 presidential candidates to attend its "Detroit Presidential Forum for Economic, Immigrant & Racial Justice."

The conference is sponsored by the National Partnership for New Americans. Co-sponsors include ACCESS, Michigan United and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.

City commissioner sentenced in theft of campaign signs

BLOOMFIELD HILLS (AP) — An elected official in suburban Detroit has been sentenced to community service after a school board candidate's campaign signs were removed from yards.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Bloomfield Hills City Commissioner Stuart Sherr also was ordered Friday to pay $1,125 in fines and court costs.

Sherr was accused of illegally removing the yard signs of Anjali Prasad, a former federal prosecutor who lost her local school board bid last fall.

Prasad said she lost about 90 signs before she went to police with home video of a theft. Sherr has said the signs were too close to curbs and a threat to public safety.

Bloomfield Hills City Manager David Hendrickson says he expects Sherr to step down from the panel after the fall election.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the Brewery Collectibles Club of America celebrated different types of beer cans at its three-day national gathering at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The club says the event attracts collectors from around the world who trade, buy and sell vintage and craft beer cans.

It is a chance for those attending to sample beer from local Albuquerque brewers.
