Settlement reached after police officer punches man
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) — A western Michigan city has agreed to pay $125,000 to a man who was seen on bodycam video repeatedly being punched by a police officer during an arrest.
The Grand Rapids Press reports Grand Rapids announced the settlement Tuesday with 24-year-old Bronquel Brown.
The officer was fired after the Grand Rapids Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit determined the officer violated department policy during the March 17 traffic stop. Police noted the officer cursed and struck the motorist dozens of times in the leg.
The Kent County prosecutor’s office earlier declined to bring criminal charges against the officer. Brown faces an Oct. 28 trial on a charge of resisting police.
Judge dismisses lawsuit by ex-principal who lost job over gift
CASCO TOWNSHIP. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a former Michigan school principal who says his rights were violated when he was forced out of his job for giving a wooden penis as a gift that he said was based on an inside joke.
John Stanton sued Superintendent Leonard Woodside after he says he was forced to resign in 2017 at Anchor Bay High School in St. Clair County.
Stanton said the female security guard who got the gift wasn’t upset as officials claimed.
The Detroit News reports Judge Linda Parker said Stanton failed to request a “name-clearing” hearing from the district.
The item was reportedly confiscated from a student.
Truck stop camel prescribed antibiotics after woman bites it
GROSSE TETE, La. (AP) — A veterinarian has prescribed antibiotics to a camel owned by a Louisiana truck stop petting zoo after a woman bit the 600-pound animal to free herself from under its weight.
Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office documents obtained by The Advocate on Monday accuse Florida couple Gloria and Edmond Lancaster of throwing treats for their unleashed dog into Caspar the camel’s enclosure at Tiger Truck Stop.
The couple told deputies the camel attacked the dog, but the sheriff’s office said the couple had provoked the animal before it sat on Gloria Lancaster. She’d crawled under barbed wire to retrieve her pet.
Gloria Lancaster told officers she had to bite the camel to free herself.
The truck stop manager said a vet prescribed Caspar antibiotics as a precaution.
Nine-pound, 11-ounce Tennessee baby born on 9/11 at 9:11
GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (AP) — A Mississippi couple welcomed a 9-pound, 11-ounce baby into the world on 9/11, at 9:11 p.m.
The Commercial Appeal reports Christina Malone-Brown was born by cesarean section at a hospital in Germantown, Tennessee.
Christina's father, Justin Brown, says bystanders joked his family should play the lottery. He says the doctor kept saying “Oh my goodness, I’ve got a 9/11, 9/11, 9/11.”
Her mother, Cametrione Malone-Brown, says her baby girl brought a spot of light to a day darkened by memories of the 2001 terror attacks.
