Voters reminded to cast ballots on Nov. 5
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reminds voters to learn more about their new rights ahead of the Tuesday, Nov. 5, local election and to cast a ballot.
The changes include allowing all registered voters to vote by mail at their convenience and for citizens to register to vote up to and on Election Day at their local clerk’s office.
“Last fall, Michigan voters used their power to make voting easier for everyone, by allowing all to vote early and by mail,” Benson said. “I encourage all Michigan voters to take advantage of these new rights.”
Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 69 will hold elections Tuesday, Nov. 5. Citizens can find out if their community is holding an election by visiting Michigan.gov/Vote.
Michigan couple with 21 grandkids claims $80M lottery prize
LANSING (AP) — A northern Michigan couple with seven children and 21 grandchildren has claimed an $80 million Powerball prize.
Phillip Chippewa, 54, of Suttons Bay traveled to Lansing last week with his wife, Dawn, and their family to claim their prize.
Their Powerball ticket matched all five numbers and the Powerball in the Sept. 21 drawing. The couple opted to receive their payment as a one-time lump-sum, which came to $42 million after taxes.
Chippewa says he now has all the money he’ll ever need to help his family for generations. The couple’s plans for their winnings include buying homes for each of their children.
They’re both members of and work for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. They plan to keep working for now.
Mistrial declared after stun belt control falls in toilet
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio judge recently declared a mistrial after a deputy assigned to watch a defendant who was wearing a stun belt went to a restroom and accidentally dropped the belt’s control device in a toilet, causing shocks to the defendant.
Marc Gofstein, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office spokesman, says defendant David Wade received minor shocks when the belt used for security purposes was activated in Columbus. Gofstein says the shocks ended in less than a minute, and Wade was medically cleared.
The judge declared a mistrial for the 40-year-old Columbus man. His trial will be rescheduled.
Court records show Wade has pleaded not guilty to charges of promoting prostitution, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and drug possession.
Teen breaks into German prison in bid to win back jailed ex
BERLIN (AP) — A teenager has broken into a German prison in an attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend.
Prison authorities in the town of Vechta told news agency dpa the 18-year-old scaled a 13-foot wall to get to his ex's window.
Prison officials intercepted the man.
It wasn’t clear whether the escapade succeeded in winning back the heart of the young woman, also 18, who had broken up with him by phone.
Regional broadcaster NDR reported that the man was half-naked, having taken off many of his clothes to avoid getting caught on barbed wire.
