100-year-old veteran honored for guarding national monument

DETROIT (AP) — A 100-year-old World War II veteran from Michigan has finally been honored for guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Jack Eaton is the oldest living sentinel of the monument, which he protected from January 1938 to December 1939.

Eaton viewed his plaque for the first time at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia last week.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Eaton says he’s wanted the plaque for a while.

His stepdaughter, Brenda Warburton, says Eaton got a little choked up on seeing the plaque, noting that’s unusual for him.

The Burton man realized he didn’t have a plaque after touring the guard barracks of the tomb in 2017, where plaques of every living guard are displayed. A plaque was erected after he inquired about it.

Man’s attempt to fool police with different names backfires

CORUNNA (AP) — A man thought he would fool police by giving them a false identity. It backfired: A man with that name was wanted by authorities.

The case in Shiawassee County ended Friday when Deonte Wilson was sentenced to about 18 months in prison for a drug charge and other crimes.

The Argus-Press reports that Wilson was stopped by police in September 2018. Officers arrested him when he identified himself as someone who was wanted by police. The mix-up was solved at the jail, but Wilson was in trouble at that point.

Judge Matthew Stewart says it's "humorous" although not for Wilson.

Wilson apologized in court.

Shop’s Halloween display: Trump holding Obama head

FOWLERVILLE (AP) — A mid-Michigan auto shop has replaced a Halloween display depicting a scowling President Donald Trump holding the severed head of former President Barack Obama by a black rope.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Quality Coatings owner Dave Huff removed the rope and Obama mask Friday outside the business in Fowlerville, about 66 miles (106 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, following criticism on social media. He added yellow tape reading: "PC-POLICE."

Huff says he's not racist and "no race ever went into this thing."

The newspaper reports Sunday that the original display was put up three weeks ago. A machete smeared with what appeared to be red paint was impaled into the Trump figure's midsection.

The Trump figure's foot also was on a head representing 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Sinkhole opens, swallows part of bus

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The front of a city bus was up in the air Monday morning after a sinkhole opened under it during rush hour in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County says only the driver and one passenger were aboard the bus when it plunged into the hole. The passenger was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and the driver was not injured.

The agency tweeted that the bus was at a red light when the street gave way and the rear half plunged into the hole.

The front of the bus pitched into the air and the front wheels of a car that was behind it dangling over the sinkhole’s edge.
