In 2017, the Washtenaw County Trial Court in downtown Ann Arbor was selected as the model Circuit court for e-filing. For over a year, staff members have been working with the SCAO and the e-filing vendor, ImageSoft, developing the following Circuit Court case types for e-filing: domestic, civil and name changes.
Chief Judge Carol Kuhnke and Court Administrator Dan Dwyer spearheaded the project; and Court IT Systems Specialist Gina Strychar, Clerk Supervisor Lindsay Ryan and Meg Ivey, Deputy Trial Court Administrator for Court Services and IT, were tasked to implement e-filing. Together, the team worked on making sure all case types could be e-filed from case initiation through case completion.
In August, the team selected Friday, October 25, 2019 as the “go live” date. They had numerous internal meetings and worked with the Washtenaw County Bar Association to get the news out to all law enforcement partners, local attorneys and parties that the court would be going live on that date.
The “go live” was a success, with over 700 filings and case contact requests filed in the first day.
“The implementation of e-filing in our Court is a dramatic customer service improvement,” Dwyer said. “We’re extremely proud of the hard work our staff have done over the past year to improve the system prior to go live so our customers enjoy a positive filing experience.”
Ottawa County Probate Court (the model Probate court) in West Olive near Holland, and Warren District Court (the model District Court) in Macomb County went live on the same day.
The goal of the Washtenaw County Trial Court is to go live with Probate, Juvenile, Criminal and Adoption case types as soon as possible, and the court has communicated this request to the State.
