Group schedules talk in Warren on vaping and risk to children
WARREN (AP) — CARE of Southeastern Michigan is presenting a discussion in Macomb County tonight about vaping and its risk to children.
The free event will be held the Macomb Community College South Campus in Warret. Parents and school-aged children are encouraged to attend.
Federal health officials have tallied nearly 1,900 cases of vaping-related lung illness nationwide as of Oct. 29, including 37 deaths confirmed in 24 states.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in September ordered the issuance of emergency rules banning flavored electronic cigarettes after her chief medical executive found that youth vaping is a public health emergency.
A Michigan Court of Claims judge last month issued a preliminary injunction, blocking the ban.
Whitmer recognizes November as Homeless Awareness Month
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has issued a proclamation declaring November as Homeless Awareness Month.
“I am a proud life-long Michigander who is dedicated to making this state a great place to live for everyone. Right now, Michigan has far too many people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness” said Whitmer.
Many dedicated organizations in the state continue to make a difference in the lives of many homeless citizens in our community.
However, more than 65,000 citizens throughout Michigan experienced homelessness in 2018.
The number of families affected by homelessness or are at-risk of having inadequate or unstable housing continues to be a significant community issue.
County approves ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary’ resolution
KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — Mohave County in northwestern Arizona is officially on the record as a "Second Amendment Sanctuary County" in support of gun rights.
The county Board of Supervisors' unanimous vote Monday follows similar actions by some county and local governments to take a public stance on the issue.
The resolution says in part the board won't authorize county spending or other resources for “enforcing laws that unconstitutionally infringe on the people's right to keep and bear arms."
Superivor Hildy Angius called the resolution a nonbinding "statement of fight."
Mohave County Democratic Party Chairperson Mary McCord Robison called it divisive and redundant.
Police: Teen says gunshot self-inflicted while dancing drunk
LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Police in northern Utah are investigating a shooting in which a 17-year-old boy says a gunshot wound to one of his legs was self-inflicted when his gun accidentally discharged as he danced while intoxicated.
The Deseret-News reports that North Park police say the teen sought treatment at a Logan hospital Oct. 5 and that witnesses told investigators that the shooting happened when the teen got out of a car at an apartment complex and started dancing.
Officers said the teen told them that the gun was in his sweatshirt pocket.
Police said the youth's account is plausible but that their investigation into possible firearm and alcohol violations was continuing.
