National Adoption Day celebrated at county courthouse
Macomb County Circuit Court will hold a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov 26 along with courts across the country to celebrate National Adoption Day.
Michigan Supreme Court Justice David Viviano will join Chief Circuit Court Judge James Biernat Jr. and Chief Judge Pro Tempore Matthew Switalski to recognize adoption families and finalize a child’s forever home.
Adoption confirmation hearings are normally closed to the public but, for this special occasion and with consent of the adopting families, the public may attend.
The event will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the courthouse, located at 40 N. Main in Mt. Clemens.
State halts sale of marijuana vape products, orders tests
LANSING (AP) — Michigan has temporarily halted the sale of marijuana products intended for vaping so that they can be tested for a compound linked to lung illnesses.
The Marijuana Regulatory Agency issued the emergency rules Friday.
They prohibit licensed medical and recreational marijuana businesses from selling existing products intended for e-cigarette use unless they are re-tested and do not have vitamin E acetate. Newly made vaping products cannot have the compound, either.
Regulators plan to inspect processing facilities twice a month to make sure they do not contain inactive ingredients that are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for inhalation.
Vitamin E acetate has only recently been used as a thickener in vaping fluid, particularly in black market vaping cartridges.
Gilchrist becomes first black LG to sign a bill into law
LANSING (AP) — Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist had made state history by becoming the first black lieutenant governor to sign a bill into law.
Gilchrist, who is Michigan’s first African American lieutenant governor, enacted legislation Thursday to end a lifetime ban on felons becoming licensed insurance agents. His signature came during a bill-signing event in the rotunda of the Capitol building.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is on a trade trip in Israel.
Gilchrist says the bill signing symbolizes the opportunity that exists when diversity is embraced. Then-Secretary of State Richard Austin was the first black statewide officeholder to sign a bill in 1988.
Starting in six months, the state will be able to issue licenses to certain people who have not been convicted of a felony in the previous ten years.
Deer with snout stuck in bucket is rescued
PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. (AP) — Animal control officers in New York came to the aid of a deer that had a plastic Halloween bucket stuck to its snout.
TV station WABC reports that the yearling deer was spotted in Putnam Valley northeast of New York City with its snout in a pumpkin-shaped bucket.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation and Putnam Valley Animal Control made the rescue on Wednesday. Authorities say the bucket was stuck to the deer’s snout for four days.
The community nicknamed the animal Little Pumpkin.
