No guns can be left in unlocked cars in Eastpointe
EASTPOINTE (AP) — It’s illegal in the Macomb County city of Eastpointe to leave a gun in an unlocked vehicle.
The ordinance took effect in October after police noticed more people were reporting gun thefts from their cars.
Public Safety Director George Rouhib tells The Detroit News that 60 guns have been stolen in the last three years. He said storing a gun in a car isn’t a good idea. But if people are going to do it, he wants the vehicle locked. Violators can be fined up to $350.
The Michigan Municipal League said the ordinance is unique in the state.
Eastpointe resident Brian Stone disagrees with the law, saying lawful gun owners shouldn’t be penalized if a thief steals a gun from an unlocked car.
Court won’t revive lawsuit aganst gun site over spa shooting
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court won’t revive a lawsuit against a firearms website over a suburban Milwaukee spa shooting.
The justices recently rejected an appeal from the daughter of one of three people shot to death by a man who illegally bought a semi-automatic pistol and ammunition from someone he met through Armslist.com.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court dismissed the suit, ruling that federal law protects website operators from liability for posting content from a third party.
The state court rejected arguments that websites that enable gun deals must take reasonable care to prevent sales to people prohibited from purchasing firearms.
The shooter was under a court order that prohibited him from possessing guns.
Portland to reimburse groups for asylum seeker assistance
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Officials in Portland say they’re launching an application process for community groups to request reimbursement for assistance they provided while the city handled the arrival of hundreds of asylum seekers.
The city operated an emergency shelter this summer and housed more than 200 people. Most were fleeing danger and political instability in Africa.
City Manager Jon Jennings says the opportunity for reimbursements is the result of donations.
Portland received more than $900,000 in donations this summer to help provide assistance to the asylum seekers.
Act of kindness softens police sorrow over spilled doughnuts
BROOKHAVEN, Ga. (AP) — The loss of Krispy Kreme doughnuts documented by police in Georgia has come to a bittersweet ending.
A Facebook post from Brookhaven police shows officers responded to the scene of “total carnage” last week.
Dozens of doughnuts fell from a delivery truck onto the curb and into the gutter of a road in the city near Atlanta, police said.
The post asked for thoughts and prayers as the total loss of the doughnuts deeply affected all the department’s officers.
Police later added a comment with an update to the so-called tragedy. It said officers in Gainesville sent a batch of sympathy doughnuts to Brookhaven police in their time of mourning.
