Sales top $200K on opening day for Michigan marijuana

ANN ARBOR (AP) — Marijuana sales totaled more than $200,000 on the first day of business at a handful of Michigan shops.

Adults 21 and older can buy marijuana. Doors opened Sunday at shops in Ann Arbor, and more will follow in other communities.

The Detroit News reports the state will collect $36,000 in taxes from opening day sales. The newspaper cited statistics from the Marijuana Regulatory Agency.

More than 1,400 of Michigan’s nearly 1,800 cities, townships and villages aren’t allowing pot shops.

Detroit has delayed recreational sales until at least Jan. 31. The city has many medical marijuana shops.

Federal lawsuit challenges state’s ban on stun guns

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s ban on the possession of stun guns and Tasers is being challenged in a federal lawsuit.

WPRI-TV reports two Rhode Island residents who say they want to purchase an electronic weapon for personal safety filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Providence.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and State Police Col. James Manni are named as defendants.

The plaintiffs are Michael O’Neil, vice president of the Rhode Island Second Amendment Coalition, and Nicola Grasso, former president of the Rhode Island Federated Sportsman’s Association.

Rhode Island and Hawaii retain bans on stun guns.

The lawsuit seeks to strike down Rhode Island’s law as unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.

Portland to reimburse groups for asylum seeker assistance

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Officials in Portland say they’re launching an application process for community groups to request reimbursement for assistance they provided while the city handled the arrival of hundreds of asylum seekers.

The city operated an emergency shelter this summer and housed more than 200 people. Most were fleeing danger and political instability in Africa.

City Manager Jon Jennings says the opportunity for reimbursements is the result of donations.

Portland received more than $900,000 in donations this summer to help provide assistance to the asylum seekers.

LSU fans invited to grab a grassy gift ahead of championship

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana State University fans had a chance to take home an unusual souvenir as the football team heads to the SEC championship — free slabs of Tiger Stadium sod.

LSU Athletics announced that fans can claim their grassy gifts on Monday at the bullpen lot at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.

LSU’s 50-7 rout of Texas A&M on Saturday puts the undefeated Tigers up against The University of Georgia’s Bulldogs in the SEC championship game in Atlanta.

On Twitter, the university invited fans to “grab a piece of history” by picking up some of the field. The sod is being removed as LSU works to improve drainage at the stadium.
