Former judge pleads guilty to perjury
Former Livingston County 53rd District Court Judge Theresa Brennan has pleaded guilty to a charge of perjury, a 15-year felony, state Attorney General Dana Nessel announced last week.
Two other lesser charges against Brennan — misconduct in office and tampering with evidence — were dropped.
She faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Brennan was removed from office in June and prohibited from seeking the same office for six years after formal charges of judicial misconduct were filed and heard by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission.
Sentencing is scheduled on Jan. 17.
‘Happy BAT day!’ — Whitmer sends Shirkey cake after comments
LANSING (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is displaying her sense of humor after a Republican legislative leader used the word “bat” and an expletive to call her “crazy.”
The Democrat sent Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey a cake for his birthday Thursday. It said “Happy 65th BAT day!” and had frosting shaped like a bat — the nocturnal creature, not the implement. She later tweeted at him, saying she hoped his birthday isn’t too “crazy.”
Shirkey tweeted thanks to Whitmer, whom he called “my friend."
Shirkey has apologized to the governor for the comments he made to a group of college Republicans. His spokeswoman says “a good sense of humor” is helping to repair the relationship.
Police: Man called out of work drunk, tried to rob workplace
OAKWOOD, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia say a man called out of his Steak ‘n Shake job because he was “intoxicated,” then showed up anyway and demanded money while holding a co-worker at gunpoint.
The Gainesville Times reports 20-year-old Kentarias Gowans, of Flowery Branch, is charged with offenses including aggravated assault.
Oakwood Police investigator Todd Templeton says Gowans called out on Thanksgiving, went to the restaurant that night, held a gun to a co-worker’s head and demanded money.
Police say responding officers arrived to see employees running from the business, which had customers at the time.
Police say an apparently still intoxicated Gowans briefly raised the gun at officers before dropping it. He was arrested after a brief struggle during which a stun gun was used.
Miami beach unveils traffic sculpture made of sand
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It took artist Leandro Erlich two years and 330 tons of sand to create his largest work of art to date — a giant traffic jam, made entirely of sand.
Erlich was commissioned by the city of Miami Beach to create the work, which was unveiled during Art Basel. The surreal traffic jam depicts 66 life-sized sculptures of cars and trucks stuck in an imaginary traffic jam on the oceanfront of popular Lincoln Road.
The installation is meant to suggest a future relic, like a contemporary Pompeii, and alludes to Florida’s fragile position in the large universal canvas, touching on climate crisis and rising sea levels.
The installation cost over a million dollars, but the city paid $300,000 thanks to sponsors and donations. It will remain on display until Dec. 15.
