Federal judge hangs up robe after 40 years
DETROIT (AP) — A 95-year-old Detroit federal judge decided to stop hearing cases after 40 years on the bench.
“Most judicial systems have a mandatory retirement age,” Avern Cohn said Friday. “While I don’t believe in mandatory retirement, there comes a time in the course of one’s work that they retire and let their work be borne by younger persons.”
Cohn won’t be in a courtroom, but he’ll still be around the courthouse in downtown Detroit.
He was a lawyer in private practice when President Jimmy Carter appointed him to federal court in 1979, although Cohn’s career has included many public service roles.
License suspended for ex-judge who pleaded guilty to perjury
The law license of a former southeastern Michigan judge who pleaded guilty to lying under oath was suspended, officials said.
The Attorney Discipline Board said the suspension of ex-Livingston County judge Theresa Brennan was effective Dec. 3, the day she was convicted of perjury, The Detroit News reported.
Brennan was a judge for 14 years before she was removed in June by the Michigan Supreme Court.
Brennan was accused of lying during a deposition about erasing data from her iPhone shortly after her husband filed for divorce in 2016. She will get her sentence on Jan. 17.
Separately, Brennan was accused of ethics violations in how she ran her office as well as for a relationship with a state police detective during a murder trial.
Tiffany & Co. bracelet dropped in Salvation Army kettle
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Salvation Army leaders in Maryland say a donor recently dropped thousands of dollars worth of jewelry in a red kettle.
Capt. Ryan Vincent is commander of the Salvation Army in Annapolis. He tells the Capital Gazette everyone was shocked to find out the ring and two bracelets were real.
One of the bracelets, a yellow-gold piece by Tiffany & Co., has been sold for $1,500. A gemologist will soon examine the ring and second bracelet that features diamonds and rubies to determine their value.
Pearl Eldridge is the ringer who collected the donation. She called the donor a “quiet spirit,” and said the woman told her the pieces were sentimental but had been laying around.
Vincent says the Salvation Army has a policy for dealing with jewelry donations. Pieces found in a kettle are kept for 30 days, but if someone acknowledges leaving a piece with the bell ringer, it's immediately considered donated.
Ray of festive cheer: Santa feeds the fish
BERLIN (AP) — Santa has taken a dive in Berlin.
A diver dressed as Father Christmas — and a companion dressed as an angel — descended into the tank at the Sea Life aquarium in Berlin earlier this month to offer the fish some seasonal cheer.
The festive feeding of the sharks, rays and others has become an annual event at the aquarium, which is home to about 5,000 underwater creatures.
