There is always lots to do at public libraries, and most of it is free. All of the Muskegon Area District Libraries have frequent events going on, but in January, Hackley Public Library (which is not part of the district library system) is outdoing itself.
Probably the most exciting thing at HPL takes place on Jan. 18 at noon until 2:00 p.m. “Murder by the Book – A Library Murder Mystery” invites the public in to try and figure out whodunnit when a librarian is found dead on a seemingly normal day. There are plenty of suspects with a motive for murder, and anyone can help the detective crack the case.
Though the event is free, tickets are required. The no-cost tickets can be picked up at HPL whenever it is open.
When that is over, people over the age of 8 might want to stay for “Books and Bookbinding” at 2:00 p.m. (until 3). The event features the special collection of historical books in glass cases at the library, and includes the history of bookbinding and interaction with a few books normally off-display. Then people can make a book of their own to take home.
Again, the session is free, but registration is required. It is open only to the first 35 patrons. Visit hackleylibrary.org or call 231-722-8014 to register.
Earlier in the month, Three Kings Day, Los Tres Reyes Magos, will be celebrated from 6-7 p.m. on Jan. 6. In Spanish-speaking countries this special day represents the height of the holiday season. The Three Wise Men arrive to bring presents, and families eat special foods. There will be fun activities, snacks, and prizes to give away. Free; all ages welcome. In partnership with Latinos Working for the Future.
Kids can make their own slime on Jan. 11 from 2-3 p.m., as part of the Hackley Family Crafts series. 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Saturday, January 11. The crafts series continues on February 8 with a craft to be announced.
HPL is holding a non-fiction book discussion Jan. 13 from 6-7 p.m. on a very popular book of 2019, Educated by Tara Westover. The autobiography, named one of the best ten books of the year by the New York Times Book Review, tells about the self-education, and later formal education of a young woman born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho. After teaching herself math and grammar sufficient to allow her to be admitted to Bringham Young University as a history student, she found out for the first time about the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and other significant events. As she continued on to Harvard and to Cambridge, she began to wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
There will be copies of the book available behind the HPL reference desk on a first-come, first-served basis, returnable at the time of the discussion.
Again, the event is free, through the generosity of the Friends of Hackley Public Library. Call 231-722-8000 with any questions.
The book to be discussed in February, on the 24th, is Becoming by Michelle Obama.
On Jan. 14, Kyle Thompson will play classical guitar from 6-7 p.m. Thompson, first picked up the guitar at age thirteen and became fascinated by it.
Now Professor of Guitar at Grand Valley State University, he is sharing his skills and talents with the Muskegon Community. This music performance is recommended for all ages. Free, again thanks to the Friends of HPL.
All of this is in addition to ongoing story times and reading competitions. HPL also sponsors Left to Write, a free creative writing group. Participate in exercises, share your own writing and meet other creative writers. Bring paper and our favorite pen.
Left to Write meets 3:30-4:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesday each month In January, that is the 8th and 22nd.
