Drivers: Rest the phone or go hands-free in Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK (AP) — Police in Battle Creek are enforcing a local ban on the handheld use of a phone while driving.

The prohibition has been on the books for months, but signs recently went up at Battle Creek's city entry points. Police now will write tickets if necessary.

Battle Creek said it's one of only a few Michigan cities to ban drivers from holding and using a phone to talk, check email or perform other functions. Hands-free phone use with Bluetooth is legal.

“There are plenty of distractions on the road as it is,” Lt. Jim Martens told MLive.com. “Creating more, especially when they’re not necessary — it doesn’t help you or the other people on the road.”

A first offense is $100.

Jackson library warns about phone scam involving book fines

JACKSON (AP) — Feeling guilty about a library fine? Skip the call: It's a scam.

The Jackson library in southern Michigan is warning the public about solicitors who are calling people to collect overdue book fines. It might appear to be legitimate because the caller ID shows the phone number of the library.

"The Jackson District Library does not take payments over the phone or ask for account information from our patrons over the phone," assistant director Jason Shoup said. “We're asking that all our patrons please do not give anyone this information that asks for it via a phone call.”

The Jackson Citizen Patriot said the library might remind people about overdue fines, but those phone calls are automated.

Mom takes selfie instead of recording daughter’s proposal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A future mother-in-law tasked with making a phone recording of her future son-in-law proposing to her daughter apparently missed the moment.

She ended up recording a selfie on her reaction to what she was seeing.

KOB-TV reports Susan Griego somehow took a selfie video of herself watching Benjamin Steele Bacon proposed to her daughter. She did capture the moment Bacon popped the question to Amber Griego by the penguin exhibit at the Albuquerque Biopark.

The couple said the selfie video made the proposal more memorable.

“People have asked about it. I feel like that's kind of our relationship. Something wacky and random,” Amber Griego said. “It's the perfect start to this.”

Her mother admitted she's probably “not very good at photography.”
