MSU credit union reports fake charges to televangelist group

EAST LANSING (AP) — About 2,300 cards issued by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union were hit with false transactions to an international televangelist network, officials said.

The Lansing-area credit union said it's unclear who was behind the fraudulent charges to LoveWorld TV. Each charge was under $100 and will be refunded, officials said.

The credit union said it is also issuing new cards to members who were affected.

Chief Marketing Officer Deidre Davis said the credit union's security and fraud management teams, along with officials from Visa, were investigating. She has said a small percentage of the company's 300,000 members were affected.

"We are very interested in finding out how this occurred," Davis said, according to the Lansing State Journal.

LoveWorld TV representatives didn't respond to a message left Sunday.

Davis said there's no evidence members' personal information was released.

Michigan husband and wife, married in 1953, died on same day

PORT HURON (AP) — A Michigan man and woman married over 60 years died within hours of each other on New Years Day, family members said.

Robert and Janet Perry married in 1953 and remained in the Croswell area until their deaths of natural causes, according to the The (Port Huron) Times Herald.

He was 84 and she was 85.

“We just theorized my dad said, ‘I’ve got to go, but I’m not going without her,’” Bart Perry said of his parents. “So, they left the same day.”

He said they met in high school because his father had a horse trailer and his mom needed a horse taken to a saddle club.

Robert Perry worked in construction of manufactured home communities and his wife worked in the office. They also volunteered on local fair boards.

Funeral services were held at the Croswell United Methodist Church.

Man left drugs, gun in designer bags at convenience store

GALLIANO, La. (AP) — Louisiana authorities are perplexed over why a man left apparent designer bags holding drugs, a gun, cash and a digital scale in a convenience store.

The man went into the store early Thursday and put the Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags on a chair, according to a news release Friday.

“The employee said he offered her $100 to ‘keep his bag,’” Lt. Brennan Matherne, spokesman for Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, said in an interview. “I don’t know if his intention was for her to hold onto the bag until he came back or what.”

The worker declined, and the man walked out without the bags, the news release said. A customer later pointed out that one of them held a handgun, which turned out to be stolen from neighboring Terrebonne Parish. It also held cash and a digital scale, while the other bag held the drug Suboxone and suspected methamphetamine, according to the statement.

Surveillance cameras got photos of the man and deputies hope to identify him.

“We haven't positively identified him ... but have gotten a couple tips already," Matherne said after the release and photos were posted on the sheriff's web and Facebook pages. "These images are pretty good, so we feel confident we'll be able to get him identified.”
